Default Engine scanning tool. which one?

So with my on going alarm issues I`m thinking about getting a scanner so I can see what's triggering my alarm through the alarm history file? ( saw it on the tube)
It would be handy for other things as well.
Don`t wana spend a fortune, prolly 2nd hand.
What's the suggestions?
Thanks.

I recommend a ScanGauge II, and using it full-time. I've been using it in my Hummer since 2007, and have been using one in whatever my daily driver has been since 2009ish.

It can display lots and lots of parameters that your PCM has sensors for (instead of seeing hot/cold on your coolant & transmission, actual voltage, and much more). It can also read trouble codes, display the data captured the moment the DTC occured, and you can use it for gee whiz on your fuel level (much more accurate than your fuel gauge & distance to empty) and fuel economy.

Forscan is free and you can see heaps of live data as well as codes. Just need a laptop and obd reader to plug into it.
