Engine runs rough at idle sometimes

Engine runs rough at idle sometimes
I originally had this conversation in another thread till I discovered i was in the wrong area of the forum 
My rough idle comes and goes and no check engine light on. All the sevice is up to date also. I can put it in neutral and rev the engine and it smoothes out afterwards.Truck runs great and has plenty of power and good fuel mileage. Any advice anyone can give would greatly be appreceited. The last thing i want to do is nickle and dime my bank account..
When the truck starts missing, it almost sounds like spark knock like when u shut the engine off and and it try's to keep running with the switch off (puttering sound). Best way to describe it is like an old carburetor engine sputtering on 2 cylinders with bad gas. Any takers on an diagnosis??? Please
