Engine rattle - Cam Phaser
2010 F150 4.6. Bought engine timing slipped (passenger side), I redid cylinder head and valves, redid timing (new tensioner, guides and chains). After starting cam phaser rattled after engine got hot. I changed phaser. Now phaser starts to rattle when car goes into drive or reverse. Seems like there is a lot of pressure needed when its on drive or reverse. seems like phaser is not getting enough oil so it rattles. I am thinking about changing VVT solenoid and oil pump. What is the best option? or any recommendations?
If it helps any, I had the Hot Oil Knock , on my 2010 5.4 with 240,000 miles , My hot oil rattle sounded exactly like a semi truck air compressor when it comes on then shuts off to fill the air tanks, usually happened when backing off from parking lot speeds when hot hot , . It never rattles at start up. One late fall day after the heater core blew it rattled and stumbled and set off the Code for timing retard . I parked it for the winter and got another truck . In spring I got the heater core changed and the guy knew F150's, said clean the solenoid screen and change to 0-30wt . I did that and the Hot Oil Rattle hasn't come back, I just pulled a travel trailer to Michigan over 3500 mile round trip a lot of 80mph and mountain passes 90F+, no rattle and it is running strong .
However, when I was looking for a mech to do the timing job, almost all refused to do it based on experience similar to yours, and said to get a remanufactured motor, because when the timing chains go debris gets everywhere and makes it worse than before, for example just a pressure loss at a cam bushing can start the cascade of destruction all over again. I have heard it helps to upgrade the oil pump and try to clean the entire motor but a reman crate motor is the way to go IMO, based on what the experienced mechanics in the real world are telling me ,
If I was in yer position, I would clean the screen and try over- changing the oil and filters to try and flush it , I might even do a "hail mary" and go to 5-40 or even 15-50 wt oil if the motor is on the way out anyway
I also heard a rumor there is a kit to jam up the idiotic VVT phazers so it cant do the hot rattle, or jerk on the cam chain because one phazer is retarded and one isn't, but I would need more info on that , it may violate EPA emissions standards .causing climate change and could even be a major felony

not sure if it is BS,.... many places in the US have strict emissions inspection and testing . it was cynical sarcasm aimed at places like CA if you get caught tampering with an emissions control system there its a big deal, maybe they dont consider VVT part of the emission control system .
