Do I really need a programmer after leveling?
2014 FX4 5.0 4x4 With the 5.0 and 6 speed transmission, is it a necessity to have a programmer for shifting points and an increase in power? I ordered the 2" level today. Tires will come a little later down the road. (probably a 295/60/20 tire)
Any feedback would be appreciated.

No.
After the tires a tune would benefit you.

No you don't NEED one but they are nice to have.
You can adjust the speedometer with them. Clear/read DCT's. Change tons of features, etc. Extra power is also a plus.

Need it? No.
Should you want one to make the truck lil more fun? Yes.
But then again, I may be slightly biased. :-)
Going with the bigger tires is what throws off your shift points and speedo a bit, not the level. And you can always go with budget friendly tire calibrator to fix that as well rather then a actually programmer / tuner.

What are the options for adding tunes? On my last truck (05), I bought an Edge Evo and used it for speedo calibration and shift points. I believe it only had a 4 speed transmission and the shift points were all over the place after level and tires. Plus it had settings of tow/haul which I felt really helped the performance out. I wouldn't mind increasing the performance on this truck but don't want to grenade an engine/transmission. All this is in mind of adding bigger tires.

i took my 87tow/haul tune off my truck as it has to go in the shop and its a dog compaired to the truck with a tune. the custom tunes do help.

So I need to buy the programmer first? And then how much would custom tunes cost? I've read that you purchase those and they email them, and then install on a programmer?? sorry for all the newb questions. Just trying to figure out how much a programmer and then custom tunes are going to cost. I'm leaning towards an SCT X4.

go to mpt tunes website and read their instructions or faq page. explains everything.. you get like 3 tunes for 50$ or something. you get the sctx4 tuner and send them info on truck and they email you custom tunes.

You don't have to but you can. Depending on where you want your tunes, it may be easier to buy from them. There are vendors on here, Franchi Motorsports and Stage 3 (off the top of my head) that have good deals on the SCT X4. If you don't buy from the place you are buying the tunes from, you will need to tell them the serial number of your X4 device. So you will have to wait to order the tunes once you have the SCT device in your hand so you can fill out the tune form correctly. You will also need your strategy code off the truck which is usually read by the X4 device in order to order the tune.
