Default Do I need 4wd?

Looking for some input from everyone, Im totally new to trucks as far as the need or use of 4wd systems. Im considering buying a new FX2 Screw because I live in the city and don't feel I "NEED" 4x4. For my price range I can either do an FX2 or a XLT 4x4 and im not quite sure what to do? I live in Orlando Fl, occasionally drive on the beach that a toyota camry could get down and most of my driving is highway, no plans to ever tow.. And yes I know some people are going to wonder why I even want a truck but its purely a looks and feel thing. Ive been driving a lowered scion tc for 4 years and need a change. I also know that most people have that attitude that they rather have 4x4 and not need it than need it and not have it and I agree but in your opinions is it woth the extra cost and marginal loss in MPG in my position?
-Yes I have searched and have not found really what im looking for
- also still stuck on the EB vs 5.0 debate but not even getting into that lol...

thanks in advance for the input everyone!

I fought with this dilemma for months. I ended up buying an XLT 2wd and used the money i saved for accessories.

I rationalized it in my head. I dont "off road" enough to justify the cost. I would have to get towed out of a jam at least twice before breaking even.

FX2 is my suggestion. I would have picked the fx2 but needed the bench seat in the front.

If you're in the city way down in FL, and aren't into offroading I personally wouldn't worry about a 4x4. While I don't use mine nearly as much as many of the guys here do, I do like to offroad once in a while and climbing and snowboarding brings me to the snow in the winter - so I even rarely need it.
If you can't see a reason you'd need it, you could use the extra $$ elsewhere!

Just my opinion, go with your gut! As far as 5.0 or EB... either way you can't go wrong.

you sure dont need 4x4 then, and you live in florida im in quebec and was also debating 4x4 and 4x2, price difference is about 3 thousand here thats a lot!

I bough a 4x4 because i couldnt find a 4x2 like i wanted, i sure like it but its not something needed even here, but i do like driving faster in the snow and not plowing my driveway

I live in Quebec and yes we do get alot of snow. I'v had my truck for two years now and used the 4X4 maybe 3-4 times, just so I can take off faster in some snowy conditions, like taking off after a stop sign in heavy trafic. Imo you don't need 4X4 from what you described.

It's sad that you have to tell people that you did a search and found nothing.
There is alway's the arrogant few smart asses on stand-by for a sad comment like
"don't beleive you searched at all".

Good luck!
I'm sure you will make the right choice!

Agreeing with everyone. Doesn't sound like 4wd is worth it in your situation. I'd get the Limited Slip though to keep the back from digging holes in the beach and getting your stuck.

I probably don't need it but I go off-road enough in places where there aren't many people that I'll probably get it.

great info guys i appreciate it, another kinda off topic question. would my gas mileage be more negatively affected by big rims with street tires or a more offroad style tire for that extra help on beach trips etc.

Nope you don't need it. Only reason I have 4x4 is because I live in canada and need the 4x4 for snow and ice. But even then, I wouldn't use it often. Only when I get stuck. If I lived in an area that gets no snow and I don't offroad, I would get 2wd. If you bought the 4x4 I'm sure you would never use it.

As for tires, just get all terrains. Good compromise between street and offroad. I've heard the hankook dynapros do well in sand. Shouldn't affect mpg too much if you stay with stock size.

Don't get the 4wd.

And to answer you other post, just keep the same size tire, just switch to more aggressive tread, like terra or trail grapplers. The bigger your rims and tires go, the worse mpg's you get.

sounds like 2wd is the winner lol
- just to throw a wrench in part of me just wants to get an Xlt and live with the bench and do my own stuff but I love the interior ( don't want leather) and the center stack floor shifter.
- All the EB vs 5.0 debates seem to mention towing and 4x4 variables and all that WITHOUT starting the 1000000000th thread on a fight within our own little group in my situation we are basing this off of, what would you reccomend.
- AGAIN not another BS arguement thread, for me specifically what do you think for city/ hwy power and better MPG.
