Looks to me like they are meant to be installed WITH the standard restraint cable remaining in place.
It also looks like they've added something to the top of the cable to keep it out of the way of the strut as the tailgate closes, or that the nut going into the bed keeps the strut further away from the side, allowing room for the cable beside it?
The DZ that I had was supplied with some goofy sliding additions that you were supposed to wrap around the cable.....those would not stay in place and were totally inadequate in keeping the cable from crimping and almost breaking the tail light at the center of the strut.....

In looking carefully at your pics, it still looks like there is a "kink" in the restraining cable about 1/2 way down the cable, and it looks like the cable is still being trapped too closely between the strut and the body at that point.....that was right where my old one threatened to break the tail light......

The DeeZee places the rod below the cable instead of in front of it. I wonder if the rod was behind the cable if that would help it from getting pinched.
