Dealership Oil too thin? 5.0 Engine
#21
Sounds like valve train noise. Lifter tick, etc. Be heard it on my 2013 with 600 miles. Comes and goes. I wouldn't bring it to dealer. Next you know they will have your engine in pieces. 8 did that with my dodge and it was never right after. Sold it and bought a Ford. I'm going to live with quiet noises unless they get worse

I would take it to the dealer and have them listen to it.
Also, use the weight oil recommended by the manufacturer. Modern engines have tighter tolerances than earlier ones. A thicker will not be able to properly lubricate into those tight tolerance areas and you can actually starve an engine of oil.
NEVER USE A THICKER OIL!

Either manually via shims or adjusting screws every 10k miles (like in the old days and modern sportbikes) or with an expandable chamber contrlled by oil pressure (i.e. Hydraulic Lash Adjusters or Hydraulic Lifters).
Whatever this noise is, it's not "normal ford engine noises". Or it would've been there during the first 15-16k miles of driving. It wasn't.
I'm probably going to have to fight against that crap at the dealership tuesday. I don't expect to fight against it on here.

Update: The truck never did this noise at the dealership, so I ignored it for a year. During which time the noise got louder and more frequent. I brought it in last December, and they eventually just replaced the entire long block, under warranty of course.
They said it would cost too much in labor time to tear into the motor, that it was better to just replace it.
So the moral of this story is, don't be afraid to take it to the dealer for random engine noises.
And damn am I glad I never bought a tune.

talk to us a little more about the oil consumption. I'm at 4k miles on my 14 and its used over a quart of oil.
Was the dealer swayed in their decision about replacing the motor because of that?
I'm already looking to trade my truck in, that's how dissatisfied I am with it.
