...maybe I shouldn't have blacked it out completely...when its bright and sunny outside you don't notice the lights in the cluster being on ,of course BUT I never took into account that my Sync display dimms at the same time ( haven't checked the manual yet, but couldn't find a on/off for it in the Sync settings.. )

Stupid Buyer here.

I just discovered this issue yesterday. Overcast, light rain, not too dark but dark enough - can't see my gauges. Fooled with my headlight switches, the dimmer, even read the owner's manual when I got home. What a stupid set up! What was Ford thinking?

Access to the sensor doesn't seem to be that much of an issue. Check out Superbleeder's USB2 post:

Again, what was Ford thinking? Before I reach for my sharpie, I would hope there would be a software fix in the future.

While I don't know for sure can someone post a picture of the dash that has this problem? I have a Platinum and don't seem to have this problem and I'm wondering if the Platinum dash is different. We have driven it during overcast days, with the sun roof open and closed, and during rain. I haven't had any problems seeing my dash gages. I'm wondering if it is specific to a certain style of dash trim.

Yes, it can easily be popped out from the top of dash, after sliding thin thing under it to pop it off. This is the method described in the workshop manual to remove it as well.

Also, pls note that this sensor is also a sunload sensor for those with auto a/c. Also, this sensor is set up to dim the message center readout (that blue readout) when in darkness or tunnel, etc and to brighten the message center readout in sunlight.

It is designed for and does a lot more than you surmise. Ford is not dumb.

I'll have to try the electrical tape trick on the sensor.
Same problem here. Damn I was hoping someone knew how to avoid this. I drove to work today, rainy and overcast and still could only get my dash lights on by covering the light sensor, which would then shut them off after a few minutes.

Wish there was a better way to do this, I don't want to put electrical tape on it!

Default Quick, simple "fix"

I took the plastic cap off a gallon milk jug...primed it and painted it a dull gray...still experimenting with the color. I put a small amount of putty inside the top of the cap and set the cap down over the sensor. The putty keeps the cap in place and so far it is working great! If you want to remove the cap for some reason it should come off easily and any residue left behind could be wiped off with alcohol or such. Now anytime I turn on my headlights the sensor will think it is dark and the dash lights will come on. That thing evidently works the same as a photocell in an outdoor light or yard light. Note..I tried a couple of different milk caps to get the right fit. Another thing is that the caps are not much taller than the sensor and after a couple of months I don't think I'll notice it at all. Just a suggestion on what worked for me unless I figure out how to wire around it or somehow use a dimmer switch from a 2010 Fusion, but that might run into computer problems, so I'll probably just stay with the milk cap. I would be interested to hear if any one try this OR comes up with something else. Good luck guys!
I got a cap from a Diet Pepsi bottle and took a Sharpie to it. No light whatsoever gets through it and it fits nicely over the sensor. I can't get any kind of tape (electrical or duct) to stick to the sensor. So I plan on just popping the cap over the sensor when I need to on overcast days. Luckily, the windshield vents are louvered (if you want to call it that) so there is no fear of the cap falling down the vent. This works extremely well!

I am also pondering the use of modeling clay for something that is a bit more form fitting and snug on the sensor I can just place on it when I need it.

I also have a Platinum and have no problems seeing my gauges in all kinds of weather or time of day.

Doesn't the Platinum have white faced gauges? The ones in my XLT are a darker colour and on certain days, seeing the gauges takes some effort. Our other vehicle lights up the gauges without the headlights. Once you are used to that coming to this takes some adjusting.

Yes, I guess you could say that the gauges are white faced and they don't have any bezels around them.
