That is where the compass direction appears, ie NW for Northwest, SE for Southeast and so on. The "--" means there is a problem with your compass module/antenna or it is not present.
I have the same thing appearing on my dash because I upgraded the cluster from the basic 2-line LCD cluster to the productivity one, and I never installed the compass.
