Could no longer take it! Changed oil & filter!

I really tried to endure the interval.... But I could not go on without changing the factory load of oil and filter @ 2300ish miles. My '12 EB FX4 got a new Motorcraft FL-500 and 6qts. of Valvoline Synthetic 5W30 motor oil. I know it really had more time that it could stay in there, but I (and my motor) will "feel" better now that it. has been changed. I worked @ a Ford dealer as a driveability tech/forman for 20 plus years, and observed intenal engine parts that had 5-6K oil change intervals performed... I will be performing my oil/filter changes @ 3-4.5K intervals from this point on. I'll ""feel good", and my truck will love me!

Oh crap i got 3500 on it right now probably should do that this weekend..

kgpat 11-30-2012 06:57 PM

I am with you on this. I could not go any longer than 1800 miles on my 13 eco lariat. I change my oil normally at around 3000 to 4000. I used to not go past 3000 but with the new engines and better oil I know it is a waste to do it like that but I cant help it. Bout 4000 is my max now. I also 'feel' better with fresh oil in engine. Plus I have always enjoyed changing my oil, especially in my trucks. wifes cars are a hassle sometimes.

tony montana 11-30-2012 07:07 PM

is the oil filter easy to get to on the eco boost?

oaksmith 11-30-2012 09:41 PM

Rotate tires and oil every 5k

Same her sorta... 4k - 5k max. I just don't drive much so I do mine at 6 months regardless of miles.

Combat vet 11-30-2012 11:47 PM

I'm keeping my F150 happy and Valvoline too. I made the first change at 1,000 mi., second change at 1,500 mi. (based on time) and third change at 2,500 mi. This is more therapeutic for me than doing yard work! With holiday stress I can feel another oil change coming on.

Lost In Sync 12-01-2012 01:13 AM

New motor. 1,000 miles it got changed. Now at 5,000 and it'll get changed. And then again at 10,000 miles.

After that I'll change it when the dash tells me to. Mobil 1 5/20 will go as long as it needs to.

iphanatik 12-01-2012 01:14 AM

I hear ya! I'm stubborn at every 3k

screw2012 12-01-2012 06:38 AM

Why are you guys not using your oil life monitor to change the oil? My Manuel says to change the oil at 10000 miles under normal operation.

My dealership changes the oil and filter for free every 6000 miles or 6 months, which ever comes first.

NOLAGT 12-01-2012 08:38 AM

I just did my first change at 10k when the dash And manual tell me to. Motocraft full synthetic now and a moto filter.

CuznVinny 12-01-2012 09:28 AM

just did the same yesterday at 2500, gonna do another in 2500 then every 5000 afterward.

Scrappy Doo 12-01-2012 11:30 AM

I do mine based on time usually, every 4 months.

Maybe too often, but i'm superstitious

2300 is way too early. Maybe it doesn't matter on gas engines but when we get new diesel farm equipment or an engine rebuilt they put special oil in it and want us to run it 150 hours minimum before changing it so it gets broke in correctly. It might not matter for a gasser but at any rate you are throwing your money away changing it that often if you use semi or full synthetic which is designed to go from 7500 to 10,000 miles. If using conventional oil then I could see that short if an interval. I change mine @ 5k the first time and between 5 and 7.5 using motorcraft semi synthetic.

beach_boardz 12-01-2012 12:06 PM

I do about 7.5 to 8000 k i drive the truck pretty hard

NOLAGT 12-01-2012 12:32 PM

Do they test run a motor in anyway before its sold? Maybe they "brake it in" and swap oil and that's why ford doesn't say to do something other than every 10k from the get go.

Adobe2X 12-01-2012 12:56 PM

I changed the factory oil at 1,500 miles, then again at 5,000, and intend to do it every 5K now.
There's just something about getting that break in oil out of there.....even though my mechanic says that with the new metallurgy of these engines, there is no metal coming off as the engine breaks in........but, I think back to my first oil change on my 2008 Corvette......the magnetic drain plug looked like you'd dipped the end of it in iron shavings. There was easily a half an inch of microscopic shavings stuck to it. Made me a believer in an early first oil change.

Should have made you a believer in magnetic drain plugs lol.

Its easy to get to. Its also easy to make a mess. There are a couple of threads on this.

RDFTS 12-01-2012 08:38 PM

First two were at 5k and have 8300 since the last change. The IOLM is showing 16% left.

Wonder why the OP being someone with Ford doesn't follow Ford manual for 10k or 1yr?

I will be selling mine in another 18-24 months and no dealer has ever gave anyone more for a vehicle because the owner changed their oil sooner that what the manual states.

Anybody remember the TV commercial a few years ago when the "no-touch" tire shine stuff first came out? The guy looked like he was having a stroke because he was so used to wiping down his tires, but no longer needs to? That is me, and these new oil change intervals! I have been an every 3k man for as long as I have been driving. I am practicing an incredible amount of restraint trying not to fall back into my old habit. I have now become an every 5k man. There is no way I would last till 10k! The truck, some will argue, would be just fine. But I am not a trade it in every few years - or less - kind of guy. When I make a major purchase like a new truck, I plan on keeping it for a long time. The last USED car I bought, I drove for eleven years! So I will keep feeding the porcelain pool a few dollars every couple of months. Motorcraft filter, and Motorcraft semi-synthetic oil is what I use.

I agree took me along time for me to get from 3K to 5K interval, sure you might be fine at 10K but 5K makes me sleep better. Whats a few extra bucks to keep your engine cleaner. I could probably wear the same underwear for a few days with no problems either, but I prefer to change them daily. Too each his own.

This is priceless.

brucesears 12-03-2012 08:22 PM

Changed mine the first time at 5K to Mobil 1 and Motorcraft filter. Will go with the monitor from now on.

HOT150 12-03-2012 09:43 PM

Had the dealer change my trucks oil the first time at 1,100 miles, when it was six months old. It is now thirteen months old with 2,460 miles and will be going in for the second soon. Dealer said every six months for my type of use is a good idea. They use Motorcraft full synthetic.

ecobeest 12-03-2012 09:52 PM

Everyone finds their own comfort level, but I am following what Ford recommends in the owners manual. Even I find the interval a little extreme, but hey it'll cover my warranty should I run into any issues and that's about all I care. It's not like I'm keeping this truck for longer than 5 or 6 years anyway.

HCFX2013 12-03-2012 09:53 PM

Wow....changing your oil every 1000 miles is just ridiculous. But whatever makes you happy. If that was the case with me I'd be changing my oil about once every 2 weeks. Jesus.

I do mine at 10k miles just as necessary. It's a truck, not a Ferrari. Even 3k miles is ridiculous.

93Cobra#2771 12-03-2012 10:33 PM

I'm doing mine every 5000 miles with valvoline full synthetic. I have 12000 miles on mine. Around half of my miles are pulling the 7500# travel trailer in my sig. I would classify that as severe duty.

I think every 5k miles is a good interval given the "severe duty" application. Regardless of what my truck says, I will be changing every 5k miles. The IOLM looks like I should be good until about 8-9k, but I am extremely comfortable at 5k. It ends up being about 2-3 oil changes per year. The waste oil is used to heat a shop, so it doesn't go to waste, and I am sure my truck enjoys the new filters a couple times a year.

Here are some pics of my severe duty. I drive around in this crap about a month every year, with a total of about 6-7 months of snow on the ground. Needless to say, the truck idles more than it is driven. The truck also lives outside, as I do not have a garage to park in. It sure does love the oil changes, as it gets to thaw out every once in a while inside of a toasty shop.

eye.surgeon 12-03-2012 11:44 PM

My wife's 2012 Land Rover LR4 has the first scheduled oil change at 15,000 miles and that was fine with me.

BadAlBell 12-04-2012 07:31 AM

So you guys that come up with your own number for oil change frequency, how do you decide?
It seems like you just pull a number out of the air, but think Ford is crazy for coming up with their own number.

Nobody has mentioned formal or even informal oil analysis. You can take a sample and send it out and get an idea how dirty or contaminated it is. This would not be needed every time but would give an idea if you can go longer or shorter on changes.
Informal test- pull dipstick, smell if it is burned, how dirty it is, drip onto a clean paper towel and look for dirt.

I agree with the guys that say whats $50 on a $50k truck, but I also like facts.

Good discussion

Funny you should mention that - I've seen several people with oil analysis results with similar conditions as mine. I've seen some go as far as 7500 miles and then step back.

Biggest problem with EB is fuel contamination, from what I've seen. But my personal preference, especially with a turbo motor, is a supply of fresh oil to turbos certainly isn't going to hurt.

BTW, my oil life meter was at 25% last time I changed at 5000 mile interval. So they aren't that far off.

Until I know for certain all the parameters the oil life meter takes into effect (for example, does it consider high load, higher engine temps, rpm, etc, or does it simply go by length of trips and number of start/stop cycles) then I will stay on my short side of the cycle.
