Does the coin holder pop out easy? I been thinking about putting my remote mute button for my Radar detector there.

Obviously

YES
based on my 2009 2WD XL
one of the wires (pin 8 if I remember correctly) has +12v when the key is on.

I use this for the leds in the foot well area.

In the "coin holder" I installed a vacuum gauge.

I like the idea of an additional power point I would recommend tapping into the other powerpoint thoough, I wouldn't put many amps thru the "little" wire with the 12v for the 4WD switch.

Yes,
remove the vent (for leverage), remove the panel, then you can push in the "detent" to remove the "coin holder", tie wrap the 4WD wire so it doesn't "rattle".

How would you remove it without destroying your dash panel?

abn150 has a link showing nice pictures of how he pulled his coin holder (page 1) out,

I did this 2 1/2 years ago and (09 XL 2wd) I removed the dash panel because I had to do a bit of cutting to fit the vacuum gauge, If you bought the 4wd switch it would just push in. To remove the dash panel I have found removing the vent so I can get my hand in there for leverage works, it snaps out easily, watch the left side around the inst. cluster bezel, so you can see how it goes back in.

GOOD LUCK

Does anyone actually use that thing for coins? I have one on my 04 and imo it's one of the dumbest things I've seen on a vehicle.

Got it, I was just worried about it breaking the tabs. Now I have this weekends project of mounting the mute switch and using the power to run the radar detector.

Well, plugged into the purple wire, but not enough voltage to run the Radar Detector. Too late tonight to break out the volt meter. Will play again in the morning.

No, it does not have enough juice for a 12v source. I put in a volt meter, had to run a line to the fuse box.
