Intended to work with Sync, the original OE display (smaller based text screen) actually remains installed/connected behind the unit. Being it's a separate head unit, it may work but I'd suspect some of functionality wouldn't be there. Namely some of the info going to the OE display and probably the steering wheel buttons.
Kit has been around for a while, there are definitely better options out there.

I don't believe it needs it to work but like Justus said some features may not work I beleive it uses sync for the bluetooth
