Default Burning Smell after disengaging 4x4

first off, its very cold out today, about -30 degrees Celsius with a windchill of -45. I was pulling out of the mall parking lot and put the truck into 4x4 high because the roads are glare ice, drove about 200 meters and turned onto the highway. at about 50km/h i turned the truck back to 4x2 as per usual, just let it idle along until it shifted, and then proceeded down the road. Right after this i noticed a terrible burning smell coming from the truck, seemed like the truck was not accelerating as hard either and not shifting the same.

i pulled over and shut the truck off and then started up and drove on. slight burning smell but went away. Any ideas as to what could have caused this??

I should also note there is only 3000 km on the truck and have had it in 4x4 before with no issues.
