Default ****!!! Broken strut assembly?

Nice sized crack. 1. Is this the strut assembly? 2. How hard is it to replace? I'm not mechanically challenged, but haven't done much on trucks. 3. Is it okay to drive on surface streets until it's replaced? And 4. Any after market parts recommendations?

Is it leaking any fluid? I would drive it like that until I got a chance to replace it. What year truck. If I am not mistaken it is just a shock and with basic tools they are easy to change.

Almost looks like a plastic covering over the shaft. If so just cosmetic.

Truck is an 09. I only noticed it because I started feeling a little drag from that area of the truck. I haven't seen any fluid leaking yet.

Thats just the plastic sheathing to protect the piston. Wouldn't be concerned. Poke it and make sure for yourself but you'll see its just a flimsy plastic cover.
