I ran a wire through the opening where the hood release cable goes through.

There are several holes you caN run through, I have yet to own a vehicle, where I has to make a new hole. poke a hole through a grommet, push wire through, and pull from the other side, be patient!

I use the tire plug tool that has the eye in it, run my wire through the eye, then poke it through one of the rubbers

I am that guy...

On drivers side just above parking brake you will see a black rubber piece that already has wires running through it. Pull firmly and it pops right out. I just ran the wires around the side and pushed it back into place.

so your wire is rubbing on bare metal? its gonna get cut son! Best way is to drill a hole and use a grommet or like some have said poke a hole in an existing grommet will work, you want rubber surrounding your wire or you will have a problem later.
