Default Brake Life?

I'm at 70,000 miles and every time I get them looked at, they say there is plenty of life and just need cleaned. They squeak really bad which concerns me. When should I get them replaced? First 45,000 was mainly side streets, so more use.

Most guys replace their brakes well before that due to rotor warpage.

70k seems to be in the upper percentiles for brake life. Unless the squeaking bothers you enough to do some maintenance, then your likely fine for continued miles.

You might take them apart, wire brush and brake cleaner up all the mating surfaces, apply brake quiet on the back of the pads, reassemble to see if the squeaking goes away.

Get them change, then you will see how worn they really were!

I'm at a hair over 80k miles and on my 3rd set of pads and 2nd set of rotors in front. Still original on back.

If you are concerned, replace them. If you aren't, don't. I'm a little curious though why a shop says the brakes need to be cleaned? What exactly are they cleaning? Generally if you have squeaks that are pretty bad, you are getting low on the pad life and may get away with just replacing them, but at least have the rotors turned if their is life left.

The dealership kept telling me mine were good. I decided to change them at 40K because the rotors were warped. When I took the rotors off the inside pads had nothing left and the rotors were grooved. The tech obviously never looked at the inside rotors or pads. So I wouldn't take their word for it.

I just changed the front on mine with 53k kms and there wasn't a ton of meat left. I've only owned mine for the last 2.5 years and I've put less on the odo than the previous owner. Truck had 28k so I've put 23k on it.

I know I tend to brake later than I should but thats rediculous. I'm hoping these EBC pads last a little longer

Replaced my fronts around 20,000. Towing TT up and down mountains noticed some slight vibration. Replaced with drilled and slotted rotors.

When I replaced my front pads and rotors (bad shake when coming down from highway speeds) at 45K miles, the pads still had a lot of life left in them. At 78K miles the rears were doing the "change meeeeeee!" squeal, but on both sides, one pad was about half the thickness of the other (I don't remember if it was both inner pads, both outer pads, or one of each). If you'd looked at the thicker pads on either side you'd probably have said they were still OK, but those thinner pads don't lie.

At 70K miles, I'd just replace them, especially if they're squealing, but I tend to err on the side of caution when it comes to safety parts.

I put 100k on the rear and 120k on the fronts before changing pads only. I tow a camper a few times a year but I use my truck like a truck year round. I've been very pleased with the brakes.
