After having some people tell me a noise was the HPFP over and over, the noise kept getting louder and I was eventually able to tell that it was in fact the cam phasers wearing out. I chose to not deal with the $3,000 repair and trade it back in.

I checked the oil two days after I bought the truck and it was at normal levels.
Fast forward 3 weeks after I really started to hear the phasers, I check it and it's about 3-4 quarts high. Fuel was getting in the oil thinning it out, and I assume is what was causing the phasers to wear out.
Changed the oil with full synthetic Mobil 1 5w30, and 1 quart of lucas synthetic oil stabilizer before I traded it in the next day.
Hate to do that, but it was sold to me like that. I'm leaving for the military on December 27th, and taking a $32k/year pay cut to do so. That said, I wasn't going to allow it to put my wife and I in any financial bind.

Moving on to the trade in... this dealership gave me $1100 more than I paid for the truck ($22000) and in return I received a 2014 Ram 1500 express quad cab with blackout package. The ram only has 27k miles on it, compared to that ecoboost having 104k miles, and I paid $300 less than I paid for the ecoboost lol.

Also since I paid less for the Ram than they gave me on trade in, I don't have to pay sales tax again...
So my only fees are $101 IL title fee, and $25 to transfer my new plates from the F150 that I hadn't even received in the mail yet before trading in.

So all in all, I came out $974.00 ahead on this whole buy and trade ordeal.

I have always been a Ford guy, but I love the Ram compared to the ecoboost. The ram actually has a great turn radius, while the f150 was a total bitch to park unless you back in to the parking space.

Lesson learned. I'll never buy another ecoboost vehicle from Ford. I'm very disappointed in Ford right now for putting out such a ****ty motor. I can't believe that a 2013 model vehicle is capable of leaking 3-4 quarts of fuel in to the crankcase. **** that motor lol.

Anyways, figured I'd share an update and give the warning to future Googlers of the ecoboost line, don't buy the ecoboost!

I'm glad you're now whole. Good luck with career transition.

Glad to hear you are in a better position and leaving your wife in a stable spot when you leave for the military.

I think you may have gotten a lemon, or the prior owner beat the living snot out of it and neglected proper maintenance. I've owned my '13 EB for ~6 months and have yet to open the hood, and I'm extremely happy with it.

My 05' F150 F150 on the other hand, I was under the hood or on a creeper under the truck every weekend, because the previous owner didn't take very good care of it. Same situation - the body was great and test drove fine; took it home and the issues started.

If you do ever decide to go back to Ford, buying a CPO from a dealer with a warranty is probably a safer way to go

Thanks. And yea it definitely feels good having a naturally aspirated V8 vehicle with only 27k miles, and a powertrain warranty until 2019/100k miles compared to that eco I had.

Uh, yes you did pay sales tax again. But that's probably good news for your tax return if you do it right.

And you're blaming the Egoboost for you buying a pos used truck people told you not to buy? Great wrap to the story, actually.

No, I didn't pay sales tax again. Illinois law. You trade in on a vehicle of lesser value, you don't pay the sales tax.

And used or not, after researching the cam phaser problem (once I figured out that's what it was) to get price estimates, I came across people having to change phasers and timing chains both at 40k and 60k miles. Oiling issues in the ecoboost. The motor is junk in that regard, don't pretend it's not. That's not even bringing up all the other issues it has as a whole. Research is king. Still glad I bought it... after all, I did profit off of it.

The worst part of this entire ordeal was that the dealer was not reported by the OP for illegal selling practices - i.e. selling a vehicle with a known emissions problem. OP should have made the dealer take responsibility, replaced the emissions parts as he is required by law to. Unfortunate.

Cam phaser issues are from not using the correct type of oil and filter, and not changing at the recommended intervals. Using walmart brand oil and filters aren't considered correct oil and filter for these trucks.

Doing proper maintenance with quality parts at the correct intervals should not show those issues.

I agree, it was a great "wrap" to the story, because I bought it anyways and made money off of it. Haters gonna hate. No more ecobombs for me, ever again. Timing chain issues, cam phaser issues, condensation issues which leads to fouled splugs and melted catalyst issues... and don't even get me started on the whole carbon build up on the valves thing, which you can't clean via chemical injestion because it will mess up the turbos.
Ford claims you need to pull the head to remove carbon buildup on the valves. Of course you can pull the intake and media blast the tops... but even so, such a joke and poor design.

Edit: left out that the majority of people who test their oil at a 4k mile intervals on these trucks find 5% or more fuel in the oil lol.
