Default Big problems with the new truck

Alright guys...I bought a '13 EB with 39.5k miles a little over a month ago from a used car lot. When i test drove it, it ran great. They said they still needed to do their inspection for warranty. Came back and said the driver side turbo had a minor vibration so the replaced it. When I picked it up (at closing time) it had no power so I took it back the next morning. They had to replace the passenger side turbo because it was locked up. They put the original driver's side turbo back on. They said they inspected it and everything was good. This was all at no cost to me.

the truck came with a 3 month/3,000 mile warranty. It does have the timing chain rattle (which I did not hear until I took it home) so I planned on taking it in for them to repair. The warranty is through their shop only. This past weekend I drove to Omaha which is about 3 hrs away. The truck ran great on the way there. It sat in a parking garage for about 20 hrs and upon start-up it rattled worse than I had ever heard it. Sounded a little off after that but still had good power and no code. Drove to work Monday and it went down on power a threw a P0022 code for camshaft bank 2 over retarded. I thought maybe there was enough slack that it jumped a tooth on the timing sprocket.

So i took it to the dealership that morning. When I pulled in the lot it started making an awful rattling noise. They called yesterday afternoon and said that it is a rod bearing making the noise and the engine will need an overhaul. He estimates around $5,000. The warranty covers $1,500 but said he will make a deal where I only have to match the $1,500 the warranty covers.

I'm not 100% confident in their ability to tear down the engine and rebuild. Sorry for the long post. What do you guys think?

That's a real bummer and part of the risk of buying a used vehicle. It is why I was hesitant when I bought my 14 used a couple years ago but mine has been okay, luckily. That being said, I would let them put the motor in for 1500 dollars out of your pocket with the condition that you will have their work inspected by another shop afterwards and if anything is not right they will have to fix it or buy it back. I would also demand a reputable extended warranty purchased on their dime. Good luck, I feel your pain.

Thanks...I know the risk of buying used which is why I bought my last truck new. It was a '17 2WD w/ 2.7L EB. That truck was great but needed to reduce my payment and 4WD. I like your suggestion. I'll have the Ford dealership up the street do an inspection. I assume they would do a visual inspection, compression test, etc. When I spoke to the Service Manager yesterday he said the work they perform would carry a 1 yr/12,000 mile warranty but I will definitely push for more.

I bought two and have had zero issues. It's like any used vehicle. You never know what it has been through. Between my 2011 and my 13 I put well over 100k on them and no real big issues.

Could you post some pictures of the undercarriage and engine bay? Did you do a carfax yourself? At 40k miles, both turbos and the timing chain going bad is quite unusual. Has the odometer been tampered with?

I find it very hard to believe that a 39k mile truck blew its turbo(s) and spun rod bearings.
Considering you got it from a sled lot, and the ease of changing out the instrument cluster in these things,
I wouldn't be a bit surprised if this thing has way more than 39k miles on it.
You should get the maintenance history on it, and run a carfax.
