Best Cold Air Intake for 5.0?
#21
Air kits work. Engines are air pumps it's that simple. However be careful reading manufacturers graphs. I don't doubt that the k&n saw a 12 hp gain but it wasn't peak. Most likely in the mid somewhere and that was a best pull out of prob 50+ pulls

I'm running the JLT CAI because its the only 5.0 CAI that requires a tune to run, mostly because it increases the MAF diameter to 110mm. It also measures 4" at the throttle body in the event you want to upgrade your throttle body. Also uses a 4.5" x 6" S&B filter. Comes with your option of oiled or dry filter in the event you don't like oiled filters.
Can't say whether or not the intake increased power as I did have to flash a tune just to run it, but the growl on the throttle is nice and the chewbacca-esque droning on highways is amusing when my stereo is down low enough to hear it. However I'd say this intake would probably be the way to go in the event of FI as it seems to be the largest CAI for these trucks.
Most people argue that the cost of increased CFM is at the cost of reduced filtration. I can't argue one way or the other because these are realms beyond my knowledge, but I found this interesting read that you guys might be able to explain.
I'm not familiar with the ISO 5011 filtration standard or test, but from this is seems that the while both S&B dry and oiled filters were less effective than the stock Motorcraft filter, they did so (at what seems to me) a negligible loss in filtration for a massive increase in CFM. 00.30% decrease seems small, but maybe in the world of air filters that's huge? Also I recognize this is published by S&B themselves, so it might be a little biased. (I also realize its for the 4.6, but a filter is a filter, I can't fathom much has changed for the 5.0 filters).
Your thoughts gentleman:

I can't believe all the guys on here bashing the CAI for the 5.0L and it's HP gains.
I couldn't decide between the JLT and a K&N so I bought both... with a little duck tape and a dremel, I got both installed..... HOLY.... I got the 12 extra HP from the K&N alright, compound that on the JLT, total HP gain... atleast 80 HP.
my results, mind you with out a true dyno test....
80+ HP gain
146 ft lbs torque gain
now getting 65mpg consistantly
and I can spin all 4 tires even in 2wd!
