Default Bedside pop out steps

I have the pop out bedside steps on my 6 year old truck. I think they are fuggly but have to admit they are very handy with an 8" box. Issue is that they simply don't work anymore. I have to grab 'em and pull like a bugger to get them to extend at this point. Tried bathing them in Sea Foam Super Creep with no change. Wondering if maybe it's the tiny struts that are the issue. Cool idea but really bad placement right in line with wheel spray and especially in a northern salt infested climate. Anyone done some fix ups on these accessory steps? Can post a photo if you are not sure what I am talking about but anyone with these added steps will likely get it.

Yeah, if there are struts they will not last forever, just like hatchbacks and canopies. I would take them off and go through them.

Kind of what I was thinking. Will wait for warmer weather then pull one of them off to see it it frees up the step. Just not sure if it's the hinge points or struts that are all gummed up. Would like to get them working properly given I have them installed but certainly wouldn't order them as a new option.
