Depending on what you do, get one.

Mine (2010) came with the folding bed extender. I loved it at first because I keep a large box in the bed with tools, hitches, tow straps, etc and it kept it right near the tailgate. Very nice in that regard.

When hunting season arrived and I was hauling a treestand, cooler, the same box with tools, another box with hunting gear, well, the 5'5" bed got small quick and the bed extender, even collapsed took up more room than I cared to spare. I took it out (just one bolt each side) and it is still sitting in my garage.

So it is GREAT it you don't haul much in your bed but when you have a bed full of anything the space loss is not minor on such a small bed.

It IS nice that it collapses and gives the the choice if it being there or not depending on the situation. With hunting season over I may put it back in.

Soooo... pros and cons, like everything else.

had one for my sport trac, golf clubs wouldnt fit in the back part when it was folded inside cause it was too small so I put it in my entry way and used it as a shelf! Might have better luck with one for an F150 if they are similar to how the sport tracs ones are.

I like mine.

For daily use I leave it extended and flipped to the inside of the bed. It keeps my tool box and any groceries etc. I put in the bed back against the tailgate and easy to get to.
I've also used it flipped out on the tailgate several times and I'm convinced I couldn't own a 5.5' bed without it.

X2 Even with the longer bed that I have. Comes in handy all the time...
