Default Battery saver message

Every time I shut down I get this message until I open the door, even after I take the key out of the ignition. Is this normal?

Battery saver. Start engine or turn ignition off

You can search around here for "BMS" to see lots of discussion on the topic. Generally, that message should mean you need a new battery. But, it can certainly be more complicated.

it just sat for 2 weeks and started right up, so i don't think it's a bad battery.

That means it's not a dead battery. It could be a weakening battery. But, search around. There has been so much discussion. Partly because people have different solutions, partly because there can be different problems.

Unplugging the BMS sensor could help. That would take a little time ( a few real drives) to see if it works.

It may be the fact that I don't drive much, a few times a week, and when i do, it is usually less than 5 miles. Several threads reference this as a possible cause. I am considering a solar battery tender to correct the issue.

Justanotherjo...
As others noted... Not normal.

It's either...
  • the alternator isn't functioning properly. *Replace with a Motorcraft / FoMoCo only.
  • the battery is weak.
  • there is a parasitic drain. *SEVERAL possible causes and needs to be diagnosed.
NOTE: The no-brainer is leaving the key in the ignition.
