I loved the text feature and used it all the time. All I did was listen to it. Only replied when stopped.
Lost all texting functionality when I upgraded my Android OS. Could never get it to work again. Every other blue tooth feature works... just not texting.

As others have stated, you're not really missing much on the texting functionality of the Sync system. Have you seen it on a Nav system? It's really about the same amount of distraction as looking at your phone. Just a quick rundown:
1. Text comes in, there is a chime.
2. Notification box pops up on the screen, says there is a message from so-and-so and gives you an option to Listen (have Sync read it to you), you press the button on the screen to Listen.
3. Generic robot voice reads text to you.
4. You press the button on the screen to Reply.
5. Pick from a few pre-determined responses (some you have to scroll to).
6. Then a new box pops up and asks you to Send?
7. Push Yes to send.
8. I think you also have to push another button to Cancel out of notification box when you're all done.
Keep in mind, none of this can be done from the steering wheel. You have to take your eyes of the road to do all of this on the screen and that's why it's almost (if not more) distracting than just picking up the phone and having Siri do it.
I realize that this is probably irrelevant to you as you have stated multiple times that you really don't care what it does, so long as it's a feature that was promised, you want it to work. All I'm saying is, even if you had the feature, you probably woudn't use it but 10% of the time.

1. you hear the chime and knew what it was as it is the only thing that interrupts the music.
2. press the button on the steering wheel twice to have it read it to you
3. if you wanted to use the canned response then you had to look at the small text screen and choose which one to send. but if you just wanted to know what was texted you could without looking away at all.
Not good to have to look down at the screen for all the steps you listed so I agree with you!

Just got it today. Haven't played with it a ton yet, but I noticed a couple new features right away.... When I started the truck on it said something to the effect "Sync is switching to external media", because the truck was last playing music through a thumb drive when it was shut off. Then I noticed it lets you pick a jpeg from off a flash drive instead of a cd for the wallpaper. Bluetooth worked right away too on my phone. I'm excited to go play with it after work to find out more new things. Also seemed a little bit more responsive.

I have the '13 fx4 Eco with sync-nav... My Bluetooth worked first couple of days I had the truck, now Bluetooth connects to my phone shows up on the screen but the only music I hear is coming through my phone not car speakers... I can change tracks and pause and play from my screen on the truck, but the music only plays from my phone... What's going on? Also when it's plugge into the USB port it all works perfectly... Is it just a sync Bluetooth issue? Anybody else experience this?

No Dog In The Fight
But I have to agree with Mamonti.
Just for the record, I am in the market to buy a pickup after all the new models are out, and I can compare apples to apples. Mamonti's complaint will be a factor in my decision.
Now, to amplify Mamonti's point: I may never use the texting feature. I'm not a texting kind of guy - little old for it, I guess. But if the truck is marketed with a feature, and presumably that marketed feature brings an additional cost to the truck, then dammit, I want that feature.
If the truck is marketed as producing pink smoke, and adding that feature is an additional component of the pricing of the truck, then I want the pink smoke. Got no use for pink smoke. Don't like pink smoke. Would never use the pink smoke feature. But if Ford advertised it as a feature and I paid extra for the package it came in, then I want it.
I'm sympathetic with Ford. Software compatibility and syncing devices is tough. But if you say your product can do it, then you'd better make damned sure it can do it. If you realize it can't do it at the roll-out, then you'd better get a crack team on writing some software fixes.
Of course, from corporate's point of view - those who have bought the truck have already spent their money. The customers can't ask for money back. Ford truck owners are loyal - if they don't like the product, they're likely to buy a new Ford, which is a win.
It's sad. Ford truly made America great. It's a shame the bean-counters are running the show.

Your current version will be listed on your www.Support.Ford.account. Once you're logged in, click on UPDATE MY SYNC from the right side of the page.

Can you confirm if there is a 'dealer only' upgrade for the non-nav Gen I sync system? The 4.2.1.4/DR3T-14D544-AE version mentioned above appears to be for the nav version.
I currently have Gen1 / V3.2.2 / BG1T-14D544-AD which support.ford.com says is the latest version. The version is also unchanged since May 2011 and is a pretty poor implementation with plenty of bugs, particularly with how it handles USB devices. If there is a newer version that could be installed by the dealer, I'd love to know about it...
Based on past experience, I predict about a 0% chance that the dealer could give me an accurate answer, at least not without leaving the truck with them an entire day and having them call the tech line. Not an acceptable method for figuring out if an update is available.
I personally find it frustrating that Ford can build such a fantastic truck (love my ecoboost), but can't seem to build a music/bluetooth/USB system the equal of a $150 Pioneer aftermarket radio.... Crashes, fuse pulling, lockups, not being able to easily select usb or bluetooth music inputs after a restart, not remembering/automatically reselecting the last aux input, poor voice recognition accuracy, etc. If you can't build a decent and reliable music/BT system, at least have the courtesy to separate out vehicle-specific functions and give us a 1-Din or 2-Din opening to easily install an aftermarket unit.
