They have a safety feature that stops the movement of the steps, if there is some kind of blockage caused by ice or whatever. I think one time a buildup of ice caused my steps to not extend. That was after driving in heavy rain and then parking, followed by a deep freeze. As soon as the steps thawed out, they functioned normally. Never had a problem in continuous below freezing weather.

I can't say about mud, but they will not be damaged if mud blocks their travel.

Is that somethign you really want to go with if you do a lot of offroading?
i can see them being ripped off or damaged from impact. i rather bend a set of tubes rather than $1000 steps.
