So, if our total medical expenses exceeds 10% of our AGI including the steps than its possible if her doctor requires it?
My wife has M.S. and while we are usually fortunate enough to have her ambulating freely and able to get into and out of my truck just fine, she sometimes has problems. After a stint in the hospital last year she was unable to step over the tub to enter the shower. I removed the tub and erected a walk in shower. As my medical expenses almost always exceed 7.5% (Now 10%, thank you uncle sam) of my AGI, I did not need the shower remodel to meet the threshold. However, I did deduct the cost of the remodel per the advice of my tax adviser. My wife is considered by the state to be permanently disabled (not that this matters expressly) and I therefore did not seek a doctors recommendation. I did have to contact an appraiser to assess change in home value as a result, as this has a bearing on other taxes etc. It gets convoluted.
The short answer to your question is, yes, you can deduct it. You may however have to depreciate the cost over several years. I am not sure. Ask a tax professional.
