Default After market GPS mounting solution

I use an aftermarket GPS every time I drive out of the driveway.

The reason for an aftermarket unit is updates and replacement cost. If the in dash unit fails, you are up a creek. If it needs to be updated, the cost will be ridiculous. Repairs to the in dash would take time that I don't have. I can’t be without it for even a day.
For those that have a problem with putting it on the windshield so it is in the line of sight and looks like a winning target for thieves, I agree. Also, what do you do with the cord and the nasty round spit circle on the window?

On the dash, just under the coin holder, there is an opening for you to put stuff. There is another one on the other side of the radio stack as well. I use the one on the driver’s side for my GPS. TomTom uses a mount that can be put in the hole. The mounts from other companies don't work. If you trim the round plate provided by tomtom, using the suction cup as a guide, to flatten the round plate on opposite sides, just enough to let it fit on the underside of the top of the hole in the dash, you can stick it inside the hole. 0

The tomtom mount will attach to the plate and allow the unit to sit low on the dash and right next to the lighter outlet on the center stack. Shorten the cord with a wire tie and it will stay out of the way. It’s easy to glance at while driving, is no further out of view than a factory unit and doesn’t obstruct your view through the windshield. The suction cup loses its suck from time to time and needs to be re-stuck. I got past this by using a piece of foam as a shim. I am on the lookout for a black or gray piece of foam, but it doesn’t show when the GPS is in place.
I never take the unit down or out of the truck and it is not easy to see from the outside. There are better people than the TomTom people to deal with from a customer service standpoint, but their mount is the only one that will work for this application.

Not a bad spot! However I have 4x4 and a TBC so i dont have the coin holder or the hole under it. I have the factory nav and an aftermarket garmin I had before I bought this truck, I much prefer the factory nav.

I have that same tomtom. Can you post a close pic of the trimming that you did?

How's your reception mounted that far down from the windshield?

These guys make mounts that secure up high between the vent and info display. I have an iphone mount that fits there perfectly.

Default Reception

I have no reception issues at all. It was mounted even lower on my 2007 Edge.
Used a belt sander to make straight edges on the round plastic plate for the succion cup.

That's where I have my Tom Tom mounted. Works well and doesn't obstruct the view.

I have my Garmin GPS mounted in the Top Left of the windshield and I bought a hardwire cable from Amazon and I hardwired it in to the aux plug. The power line to the Garmin is hid in the pillar and goes down and goes under dash to where I wired it right behind the radio bezel. Didnt take long to pull the radio bezel and hardwire tap into the cig lighter power. I did that for my GPS because I hate the wires. I also have a radar detector just to the left side of the rubber area on the dash in the middle and I have a hardwire there also that is dropped underneath the rubber mat in the middle.

As you can tell I hate wires showing lol. Doing all the hardwiring is great because you dont have the cig lighter cords all over the place and the cig lighter plugs are all available

My Proclip mount solution. Actually, I just took this off and am selling the Garmin as I am getting a Pioneer AVIC X920BT which will handle my backup camera just fine. That is why I had this Garmin nuvi 5000, for its av input. Thanks.
