Default 6R80 transmission fluid help.

Hello All,

I'm working on a 2011 f150 ecoboost for a buddy and have run into a couple things that are throwing me for a loop. To be upfront, I do not have a lot of experience with these transmissions.

So what's been happening is a series of things. For one I have the dreaded P0741 and it downshifts super hard sometimes.

The other thing - At some point he told me that his radiator broke on the inside and the tranny fluid and coolant mixed. He got that fixed at another shop. When he dropped it off at my place, I noticed that both fittings on the front drivers side of the radiator were loose. I tightened them up and thought well, maybe I should check the fluid level lol.

So I took it for a drive and warmed everything up for 10 minutes or so. Brought back and left it running. I removed the 19mm dipstick cap to check. Wiped, reinserted it and pulled it again. The fluid seemed to be overfilled because as I pulled it out, it seemed to be as high as the base of the dipstick, was above the actual stick part.

I thought to myself that maybe I should check the fluid while its been sitting for a while, i.e. cold. So today, I went under there and removed the 19mm cap and was greeted with a large, consistent flow of fluid pouring out of it.

Oh man, forgive me for my ignorance, I'm used to having a normal dipstick, haha!

So, What I expected was that I'd be able to pull out the dipstick and it would read on the low end, but instead it poured out with a consistent flow until I recapped it.

Is this normal when checking cold or do y'all think it's overfilled?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

ford tech makuloco

go to his youtube channel and watch the vidoes on how to properly check/fill the trans.

Sounds like it is overfilled based on what it did when hot but you always have to check these engine running, even when properly filled if the engine is off it will overflow

There was a recall to reprogram to address the sudden downshift several years ago.

I just checked the codes related to the lead frame, but it doesn't list the code I was getting as one of them. Doing more research.
