Default 5-Star Tuning Review/Experience

Ordered one for my Ecoboost with 87 Economy, 87 and 93 Performance/Towing tunes after talking to Mike in length. Received the unit in a about a week. I ran into an issue with the programmer not being able to communicate with my PC first with XP. I've tried it on another PC with Vista which communicated but the interface window was not sizing the contents properly so I could not see the buttons to browse and upload the tunes from my computer. Mike suggested that I should change the screen resolution which of course only changes the displayed window sizes. Then, I've tried with another computer which was recognized and was able to see the full content of the open window. I think this is related to how SCT makes their devices to be compatible with various operating systems. Neither included instructions nor the websites indicate what are the OS requirements as far as I could see.
I chose to install 87 P/T tune. First attempt gave an error and did not complete the install. Tried the second time, and worked. Gave me a mini hearth attack by the mean time.
I drove about 200 miles before hooked up a trailer which weighed less than 3000 lbs for a 2000 miles trip. I was getting about 9 mpg first from the get go with the trailer but in about 250 miles or so into the trip, noticed that there is a constantly on/off blowing sound from the turbo every few seconds. Noticed that mileage dropped to about 5mpg at 60mph. Pulled over, restarted but did not change anything. It was shifting to 6thAnother hundred miles I drove like that but couldn't drive any further getting 5mpg. Stopped at a gas station and reflashed it back to stock. Mileage went back up to 9.5mpg at 60-65mph with the trailer. Completed the trip like that and contacted Mike when I came back. He said it was normal and he tows 10,000lbs and gets 9-10mpg at 60-65mph. I was not quite sure how it is normal if I could only get 5mph with 3000lbs trailer. So, Ive told him that I wanted to return it. He said go ahead and took 30% off which I later found out posted on his web site.
For me, trying 5Star was an uncomfortable experience with a cost of nearly $130.
Just sharing my experience and thoughts...

YIKES! DUDE this scares me. I would only go Livernois from what I have heard. I haven't read anything like your experience with them. Bummer.

Something isn't right there, I've got the 5 star 93 perf/tow and switch back n forth between it and Livernois 93v2 about 3-4 times a week and I tow my bass boat with the 5 star and I get anywhere from 12.5- 13.5 depending on how fast I wanna get to the lake. It's too bad he couldn't have re sent you a different tune and try it before you sent it back. You would love it when it works right. Good luck with your next one. Livernois tow tune is pretty good too.

I got my 5star tune with the SCT from Mike for my Raptor and it ran as intended for a year, never an issue. It was pretty straight forward install, I always allowed the tuner to do its thing and followed install to the letter.

I haven't, il be honest I've been afraid to try lol. I would need new tunes to match my ecu anyway. if I did do it again I would buy a tune from some where else. I didn't get much help or a friendly vibe from mike so I will take my business else where if I grow a set and decide to actually use it again.
