In the days of the regular cabs the 6.5 bed would be considered short. I even had a Chevy Longhorn bed that was close to 9' long on a C-30 SRW. It's all what you need a truck for and a lot of times my 5.5 bed is useless so I need to pull the 14' utility trailer.

Pop quiz: which pickup has the longer bed? The F150 is a 5.5'. The other is a '39 Ford.

Is the 5.5' bed big enough to carry the following?

1. Coolers of fish - Check
2. Hunted game - Check
3. Sports equipment - Check
4. Beach stuff - Check
5. Firefighting equipment - Check

This is why 5.5' bed works for me. Buy whichever fits your needs the best.

Personally I went with the 5.5' bed because that slows down the chance of me hauling with a truck I don't want to haul with.

The truck we traded in was a 02 F250 crew cab short bed (6.5ft bed).
It was ok to park.

If I were hauling I would get the 6.5' bed otherwise 5.5' bed.

Plus in my opinion the 5.5' bed looks better.

Where I live you need a 4x4 truck to get in and out of here however when you have as many trucks as me you try to have one nice one that you haul little to none with and one or more for hauling stuff.

I have hauled with it but not much just 2 engine blocks (460 and 302) for two of my other trucks.

I have the 6'6" bed. I need and use every inch. I like the space with work or play.

Come out west by me. Its RAM central out in the oil patch. And they take a beating. I actually have a lot of respect for RAM based on the almighty beatdown I put on the work truck. (still wouldn't buy one for personal use!)

My company truck is a 2102 2500 gas crew cab with that 8ft box. I have a toolbox and another rack that holds 5 gallon buckets behind that. Love that long box.

I love the 5'5" bed, it suits my needs perfectly. If i need to haul bigger or nastier things i use my F-250 with a 8' bed. For camping I can tow the travel trailer and haul what i need in the bed without much issue...hell the 4 wheeler even fits with the tailgate up!
