5.0L Short Block Replacement Time Lapse
Well the 5.0ls have plenty of noise issues none driveability though. The early ones had a knock noise from the "stretchy" belt" design, then they have water pumps that make a engine knock noise, they also have a few valvetrain problems nothing big, but the other common big problem is cylinder bore distortion where it is literally different sizes upon the bores length causing a slight rap/ knock noise this one was noticeable enough I would feel embarrassed to have my truck idling in the drive through etc. I was able to isolate the noise to the RH bank cylinder #3 and from reports cyl #3 and 4 are most common. I was able to make the noise diminish significantly by cancelling the cylinder at that point its short block time, fun fun.
Well this is the first one I have seen but looking in the Ford Hotline database there are tons of reports on it, I imagine yours is a 2013? I would think yours has the revised engine in it.
So I guess is there anything to watch or listen for on earlier models other than the slight rap/knock that you described earlier? You don't happen to have a video of how this sounded, do you?
Yes mainly just knocking noises out of the ordinary. No recording, now I wish I would have made a recording of the noise I think it would have picked it up good oh well.
Follow up question - is there a place to find specifically what was revised for the 2013 engine? I mean, I plan on owning this for a LONG time, so I'd like to either know more about it, or plan ahead. LOL
Good work and thanks for posting this. It's nice to have a shop with the tools to pull an engine like that. You have obviously done this a few times and like another member posted, you are a "machine". Again thank you for making the time lapse it was really neat to see that motor come out and go back in. It's like auto ****, but with out the happy ending.
