5.0 vs 3.5 Eco towing

How was the deal on your trade? My dealer is constantly trying to get me to trade up.
Mine is a mint 2014 fx4 with 29,000 miles and I know they want it. I'm just not sure I want anything yet...
Nice looking ride btw. Congrats.

Congrats on the new truck!
I pulled my buddy's trailer for the first time a month or so ago. Approx 4000 lbs. Also had a motorcycle, misc gear and half a dozen gas cans in the bed plus 3 occupants (including myself). The Eco pulled beautifully through rolling hills. I could feel the load when accelerating/decelerating from/to full stop but otherwise it wasn't really noticeable.
Fuel economy only went down the equivalent of about 1 MPG compared to city driving which really surprised me. I've got the 3.55 and Duratracs in stock size.

Congrats on the truck! I don't have experience towing with my 13 ecoboost. I did recently have a rental 2016 5.0 and I liked it. One thing that was annoying as hell was the downshifting at highway speeds. At 70 with cruise control set, it would have to downshift going over every overpass. I can only imagine how annoying it would be to tow with the 5.0.

Ya this thread is really convincing me to go with the Ecoboost. I don't tow often, but when I do, I tow up into mountains and over a few hills to get to fields.

Mountains and hills are exactly the advantage of the Ecoboost, the only time towing with a 5.0 is as comfortable is on a flat grade with consistent speed, all other conditions and the Eco pulls away, especially at higher altitudes.

Eco's are easier to find than 5.0's in used market anyways so this is a good plan.
During deer season, I'm up to about 4500' but it's some steep inclines to get to the top with our tent trailer.

The Eco is hands down the best towing experience i have ever had (never driven a diesel). This trailer weighed 7,000 - 7,500 lbs and i barely felt it. I do have a perf/tow tune from 5 star and 34" tires. I was still able to manage 11.5-12 mpg on semi flat roads.
