I'm still adamant that this knocking noise is not an engine PROBLEM/ISSUE. It's something in the design of the engine, and not necessary intentional.

Now anyone who has their engines replaced will defend this by saying "but the dealer took my engine apart, and found scoring". These dealership mechanics are trained to follow a set of procedures. They are NOT engine builders. I'm willing to bet some of these "scoring marks" are all perfectly normal marks on an engine that's been run for a few thousand miles. And metal shavings in the oil filter? Please.. that's why we have oil filters, and some small shavings could be completely normal! I have a mechanic friend that works at a dealership, and just recently did a engine tear down, and determined it bad. He doesn't know JACK **** about engines, and he's not one to inspect an engine.

And I don't even want to begin about the people who are in here with a ticking noise from the heads. The thread title says "5.0 Engine Knock". knock does not equal tick.

Anyway, rant over. Flame away.

Are we talking about service plans or warranties. I turned down the ESP because all it did was give me discounts and some free oil and transmission oil changes. How does a Service plan cover replacing an entire engine? I REALLY wish these Service guys could explain stuff better geezuz!

I'm kinda with you on this one. I was ACTUALLY set to tell the dealership I was tired of all the appointments and would just live with it. Ran fine. I could only hear it stopped and out of the truck and "listening". All these guys do is follow rules, manuals and guidelines. Very few are actually qualified (and old enough) to determine if a engine is shot and why. I can hear a faint knock and fully expect it to get louder by next year. Several have said the knock comes after a oil change? Well, I am switching to synthetic first change after this new one was put in. Stay tuned LOL. Ya know, Ford could save a ton of money if they just had reasonable explanations and actually gave a
flying F--- about us. Instead of just saying "it's is normal" Why did I have to spend over a year agonizing over my NEW truck? This experience will DEFINITELY play a role when I decided to get another new vehicle.

I think I problem with this whole thing is the uncertainty of the longevity of the most expensive thing I have ever purchased.

When I first bought it the truck idle glass smooth, now it shakes so bad (on occasion) it feels like it is dying on me. Started at 1k miles, at 18k now, they say this is normal. If I wanted this normal I would still be driving my 86 vanagon with 800k miles that ran smooth until 500.

Am told weird engine noise is normal, if this is okay I should have kept my 97 explorer with 300k miles.

If either of those cars died I'd be out 2k. If this engine dies outside warranty I'm out 10k plus. I feel pretty screwed that my only consolidation is people on the Internet tell me it's "normal" and the dealership which tells me "well then why don't you just trade it in for another" at a loss.

I hope you are right.

UPDATE

Just heard back from dealership.

Cylinder #8 is out of round they tell me.

They need to go back to the engineering hotline to confirm what they are going to do next. They are thinking engine replacement but cannot offically tell me until it is approved.

Yeah, yours does have a legitimate problem and you were right to take it in. But not all knocking behaviors are created equal. My 5.0 has an intermittent "knock" ONLY during the warm up period and it goes away 100% when engine is fully warm and it has been like this since day 1. Sometimes it doesn't do it at all even while warming up. This is the normal range knocking that happens due to the different rates at which aluminum and iron heat up, temporarily causing a slight tolerance difference, creating the temporary knock.. once everything is up to temp, tolerances are back to normal and its buttery quiet and smooth. So I'd be wasting my time taking mine to the dealership as I have no knock to show them when I arrive and my engines warm, and I know that the above is exactly what they would tell me.
And fwiw, I stood next to a new RAM 5.7 hemi the other day that was parked idling and it had a mellow knock to it, but nothing alarming. It was still a quiet engine overall. And it was already warmed up, making it more of a "knocker" than my 5.0 (which isn't saying much). So there's clearly a certain percentage of the knockers who have a real problem and it is NOT 100% despite what some on this forum believe. The cases need to be looked at on a case by case basis.
