Mine has a similar knock. While warm too, only slightly quieter. Having mine and my dad's 2011 5.0's sitting side by side, his does not have the knock. I'll have it looked at in the spring and take my dad with me so they can compare similar age and mileage trucks.

I had a slight knock in mine. I think they called it cylinder bore distortion or something its usually in cylinder #3. I also had compression loss in 2 cylinders unrelated to this issue. I think it was just the 2011s and ' early build '12s. Ford put a new short block in it for me. My truck had 25,000 miles on it

^^This. Some cylinder bores were not formed correctly. Also have the dealership verify that your spark plugs are gapped correctly. I've seen reports on here about wrong gaps on spark plugs. My other 13 had a knock when cold. I checked the plugs on a personal service to eleminate problems. Come to find out they were set too short. IIRC mine were set at about 32, when they were supposed to be around 42. Sounds goofy, but check it out to rule it out.

The knocking occurs when warm also. I appreciate the input so far. I thought about checking the plugs, but have not yet. Maybe this weekend I can get to it.

I've noticed the same on my truck at times w/ 23k miles. Not nearly as pronounced as in the video posted, but it's there. Seems to happen only when the engine is not up to operating temp. But as others have mentioned, it's totally random and doesn't happen all the time. When it does occur, it's only at idle. Raise the rpms just a hair and it's gone. The truck just runs so damn well I have a hard time believing my engine is slowing eating itself. I am waiting for it to happen more consistently before I address the concern with Ford. I have just shy of two years left on my powertrain warranty (late model year), so I have some time.

I'm going to hazard a guess that after you disconnect the Cop and still have the noise it will be the Cam shaft area. It comes and goes which is oil pressure related I believe. Possibly on your own drain out the crankcase and put in 5W30, see if it goes away or immediately gets worse, if it does you know and then put the original back in. Costs you $25 to find out if it is oil starvation to a part. It will last until it breaks. Many 5W20 motors are noisy on start up; put in 5w30 quiets them down but in the long run the motor will not live for much longer a time in 1000's of miles, speaking. If it is the Cam on that side, it flattened out a lobe on break in and only replacement of it is going to help. The motor will loose pep as it continues to degrade. Sometimes going to a heavier weight oil removes the air and the tappets charge properly removing the gap. If that tappet is leaking down you will notice a difference. The noise seems to be timed with a lifter/camshaft not a piston/wrist pin/rod. If you come to believe it is piston slap you may notice more blow by out the fill cap as time goes by.

Ok..so this thread has me a bit paranoid now, so I'm busy googling. I'm sure many of you have seen the 5.0 shortblock replacement time lapse video by "FordTechMakuloco" (I believe he posts on the forum at times). I was checking out the comments and he posted this:

So he claims it's not detrimental to the longevity of the engine? He seems to be a fairly trusted source for info. Sure seems more risky to have someone install a new shortblock than to hear a slight knock from time to time....

Thoughts?

Sounds just like the infamous GM piston slap. My 6.0 did it for 11 years and 140K with no issues. And, it did not have an easy life.

I have a 2011 with 44,000 miles on it. Mine is also making the noise although it doesn't seem near as loud as the other videos I've seen. My question to you guys who have this sound, did it ever sound like mine and has gotten louder over time? I've only had this truck for 2 months and absolutely love it. It runs great and is in like new condition. But the noise is unsettling. Here is my video:

This sounds more of a TICK or a TAP to me. Different noise IMO. Maybe not. I dunno
