For those of you with the valve train tick; that is a problem I have experienced. The truck was brand new and I brought it home, so 30 miles on the engine, and I head a very distinct ticking sound coming from the passenger side valve cover. I have heard it before on older high mile cars\trucks. Took it straight back to the dealer! Turns out the lifters were bad! They replaced them and a week and a half later I got my brand new, with engine work, truck back. Now this knock issue! Wow I'm ready to lemon law this thing!
piperville thanks for the recent video. It just reassures me that I'm not going crazy cause I recorded one that sounds exactly like urs.
If they would just scope the cylinders they would see a problem. No need to tear it down until after confirming a certain cylinder had excessive wear.

What's sad is how many people have this same problem on this forum.Just look back a few pages. There's even one asking for anyone who doesn't have a knock please post a video. What's even worse are the people who have a bad engine and don't even know!

I have had it looked at in early April. Like so many others the dealer said they did not hear it, but when I picked the truck up I was able to talk/show it to the tech and he said he heard it. I had it recorded on the service sheet that a knock was heard, but they said there are no fixes at this time. I need to take it back in when I get a chance because it is definitely getting worse. The problem is I need the truck for work, so it is hard for me to let them have it for a day or two.
My truck is a 2012 XLT x-cab, 4x4, with 42k miles.

I thought I was the only one and I was starting to feel like a whiner. After awhile they wear you down so you think you are just being picky. I have had 3 F150's over the last 6 years. Two were leases with jobs and this one I bought because I loved them so much. Never a issue with any of them. Just put gas in and change the oil. I fought back all the Ford haters and spent $60,000.00 CAD on a brand new loaded Lariat. All black with black leather. My dream truck. Spent another 10k on rims and tires and a lift and cat back exhaust, Roush intake, custom canopy Rigid LED's etc etc. I lose all this if I get rid of it. Never recoup that stuff. This is one reason I am getting PO'd! I attached a photo. And of course this photo was taken at the dealership

My 2013 has 42k miles on it. This weekend it has started knocking bad on start up. It goes away once it is driven a couple miles. I'm afraid it's piston slap. Taking it in to the dealer tomorrow morning.

wanted to put an update out there on mine.
My three 5.0 issues
1. Ticking passenger side constant but louder after oil change
2. knocking when warm, (sporadic, but somewhat frequent)
3. metallic tapping low end, again frequent yet sporadic, but way more noticeable immediately after oil change.
As you know they replaced the water pump and timing chain tensioner a short time ago and I said it sounded better after. I dont know why but that didnt last long at all. Now I dont think that was a fix after all Im thinking that it still had the Penzoil Platinum oil in it that had about 3k miles on the oil and that was why it sounded quieter along with extreme wishfull thinking.
As soon as I did the next oil change back to MC Syn Blend on Senior Techs advice it was back to its old knocking ticking tapping self. Took it up to the mountains and sounded like crap the whole way, I kept hoping it would shatter a piston or something, but now after 500 to 600 miles it sounds better , not great but better, still hear the sounds but they are duller.
Everything is loudest after an oil change. The first 300 to 500 miles is the worse, you can really hear the tapping and ticking metal on metal stuff then starts to quiet down some I guess as the oil gets dirty or something.
It does sound better with the Penzoil Pure oil though. Im going to change it back to the Pennzoil Pure and see if there is an immediate sound difference.
I wish I could get a face to face with the 5.0 engineering dept, I think they should all be fired, clean house. With Fords financial position and "Advanced engineering platform /technology" There is absolutely no excuse for this 5.0 BS. This 2012 F150 5.0 is definitely my biggest regret as vehicles go.
I think maybe its time to just live with it till I can afford to get rid of it while the carfax is still clean.

I've been on this forum for 3 years now, and when I learned of the cylinder distortion problems/knock with the 5.0's, I was so disappointed because my build date of Nov. 2011 falls right in that build period. I am now one that can be added to the 5.0 knock list. My 2012 5.0 only has 9,500 miles on it and the engine knocks on a cold startup. It's definitely coming from the RH bank - typically cylinders 3 & 4. The knock does, however, disappear after the engine is up to operating temp. Typical of piston slap. I literally just paid the truck off last week and this is my reward. I spoke to one local San Diego area dealer about "new" short block and "re-manufactured" short block. He said if the mileage is under 12k miles, then a new short block would be installed. Yea, I am under 12k miles, but just outside the 36 months. My biggest concern is the quality of the work on an engine R&R. As a tech many years ago, I know what can happen if attention to detail is not a priority. Fix the block and end up with a multitude of other issues. The tech that I would really trust is Brian, the YouTube ford guy that called his channel "fordtechmakuloco." But that ain't gonna happen as he is in Chicago - a long way from SoCal. Here's a couple of videos of my 5.0 on a cold start with the knock, and another after its up to temp. Sounds like two different engines.
I'll keep you all updated on how things go with the dealer.
Thanks to all who have come forward to get the word out on this 5.0 knock. Ford really needs to get the block/cylinder distortion issues corrected. My $42,000 truck is by far the worst ever, and believe me, I've had a lot of trucks in my day. Never have I had so many issues, plus an engine replacement! Good grief! Shame on Ford for pushing out a motor that has not been "real world" tested. Ford: update that 5.0 block and get 'er done once and for all. Wish I would have gone with the 6.2L.

I miss my 06 z71.......my f150 is like a new truck now with the new block and rear end....but my chevy, which wasn't without it's own problems, never had a major mechanical failure until 200k. A lifter went bad. I figured instead of pouring money into an old truck oh I'll get one with less miles thinking less problems!

How can Ford ignore all this?
Holy smokes and another! What the hell?
Thank God it is not only me. I was getting worried that I was hearing things LOL!
Dear FORD: What are you going to do about all these dissatisfied customers?
I wish Ford would be on here as all we are doing is talking to ourselves.....
