Default 5.0 Engine Issue - Stalling Sound?

Hey guys,

Every once in a while my truck will feel as if it's going to stall out. It makes the sound like when you drive a stick shift and have it in too high of a gear and the engine struggles and makes knocking sounds. Anyone know what I am talking about? It seems to happen when going up a hill and the tranny stays in too high of a gear and doesn't down shift. 9 times out of 10 it doesn't happen but that occasional time it does it worries me. Please let me know if there's something I need to bring in to have checked or what the fix may be. Thanks!

I've had this truck 5 days and I think I've heard it twice. It only happened for a second, so both times I thought I was crazy, but reading your post, maybe not.... 2014 5.0L

Edit: I'll come back if I hear it again.

Default 5.0 Engine Issue - Stalling Sound?

Curious for some more info?
Does it happen randomly, I mean, it can happen in any gear at any given time? Happens regardless of how much fuel is in the tank?
Checked the usual suspects, air filter, plugs, coils..etc?
How many miles are on your filter, plugs and coils? Checked tranny fluid level?

I have a 2014 5.0, and I think what you're referring to is when you're accelerating or under load, if you don't give it extra throttle it seems to "bog down". It seems like there is a balance point where if you're light on the pedal you're not into the power band, but if you give it a little extra you've got a completely different animal.

I find it frustrating, but assume that it has to do with gearing/transmission programming to optimize fuel mileage?

That's a really good example of it. Seems to bog down if light on pedal instead of being a smart computer and downshift so you don't feel like you're going to stall. I wonder if Ford has a TSB for this and maybe a new tune for the truck?

To answer masitile: I have approx 25k miles and a clean new air filter. Haven't checked plugs etc since it's so low on miles but I can open it up and check if that could be the problem? Seems like it's more of a tune issue to me though. Doesn't matter how much fuel and mostly random when being light on the pedal and under any kind of load i.e. going up a slight hill when your truck seems to need more power.

One thing to note I have bigger tires on my truck and leveled. Maybe that added weight and load of tires adds to this?

I have the same issue on my 2013 5.0L. It happens before gear shift, when moving slowly, driving with cruse on.

It will be taken to the shop in a few weeks to have all the warranty work done before it expires.

And yes it feels/sounds like a manual in to high of a gear.

Would you do me a huge favor and email me your work order once the issues are corrected? Maybe that will help me when I bring it in to show them what needs to be corrected. The first time I noticed it was in cruise control going maybe 35mph and started to go up a slight hill and it bogged out. Now I can almost replicate it with a light foot on the pedal keeping it in a gear that needs to be downshifted.
