4X4 not working at the launch ramp
So i have a 2012 XLT 4x4. I went to pull my boat out of the water and the water was so low that the trailer and the rear truck tires were past the end of the ramp (usually no big deal just engage four wheel and go). This time the light came on and everything said it was in 4x4 but no dice. My rear tires dug in and no front tire action. Since the water was so low i actually had a not so good day having hit a sand bar and breaking the rudder of of my boat
. So with that and the 4x4 not working i was about to just sink the damn truck. Then i got to thinking, i had replaced the front hub actuators a while back and remembered that it was all vacuum operated and without vacuum the hubs lock in. I disconnected the vacuum line from the solenoid and presto four wheel drive works. I think i need to replace the solenoid but if you have other opinions please chime in and if anyone knows what the part # is please let my know.

I agree with the quick thinking! It's awesome that you understand the mechanics of your truck that well.
It certainly sounds like the solenoid or possible a bad connection to it. I'm not sure exactly how to measure it but it would be worth making sure that the solenoid is properly powered and grounded.

Just for reference, where in the engine bay is the solenoid to pull the vacuum line to engage 4wd manually? That info could be a lifesaver for others to know in future scenarios like this one.
