4WD sound

Hey guys,

Just wondering if your trucks sound much different when in 4WD. Mine makes a whirring type sound when accelerating. My previous truck ('07 Tundra) did not make this kind of sound. Dealer checked it out and thought it was rather noisy so they contacted Ford Canada. They said it could be driveline wind up and said to just see if it gets worse.

Here's a video of the sound I'm hearing. It may be completely normal but as I said, my other truck didn't do this.

BTW, I don't normally drive in 4WD on pavement, this was just for demo purposes as I wanted a surface that wasn't too bumpy for the video. Tire pressures were all 39 psi and I drove in a straight line.

I cant say about my truck as I havent used 4WD yet but I do know on my jeep that it has a whir or whine from the transfer case at all speeds.

I know my Jeep transfer case is chain driven which contributes to the whine or whir, not sure but I bet the transfer case in the F150 is also chain driven and that is most likely the cause.

honestly I have that sound as well, as did my ranger, I dont know about how loud it is, but I know mine has it at those speeds as well, I will check mine when I get a chance, but to me it sounds normal.

The thing I find strange is that the sound seems follow the gas pedal and acceleration rather than the forward motion of the truck almost like when the torque converter unlocks. If I push the gas pedal, the sound will increase in frequency and loudness even before the truck begins to move faster.

all I can tell you is that all my 4x4 vehicles have done this in one way or the other, My F150 seems to do it more than my ranger but......... its bigger engine, dif, axle and all that so I dont worry about it. Try takeing it to a different dealer to see if they can A: identify the problem B: correct it. Or you can test drive a new F150 and test the 4wd system on a straight away.

Yeah, I'm not worried, just more curious than anything. I hardly ever use 4WD anyways. Just a few times in the winter really. This truck is so quiet that any other sounds seem more noticeable which is a good thing.

Posted up in the other thread... I have the same noise on my 2011 FX4. Since new. I did mention that the noise seems to be diminishing with more accumulated 4x4 miles, but I'll keep an eye (an ear, really) on it.

i know this is an ancient thread, but with my 2014 it reacts the same way. the noise reacts to engine speed, not vehicle speed. at first i thought it was chain noise, but i'm not so sure.

So 2010 and 2011 and 2013 all make the same sound and all have not suffered from it.

I've used the 4WD in my 2013 and have not experienced that noise. However, I did not drive 40mph in 4WD. I was actually going up steep mountainous trails.
