2014 5.0 knocking at 55k
I'm sure this has been talked about before, but I'm really not happy about this. 2014 STX sport SCREW 5.0. Started knocking a week ago but comes and goes. At 55k, this is ridiculous. I've been very nice to my truck. It's been my daily driver since new, and it only tows an 18' ranger around on the weekends. The truck has been to two dealerships now and both have said "oh it normal" or "I can't hear anything". I loved this truck, but this has been a major heartache and I'm losing my confidence in Ford even wanting to help. Has anyone else experienced this with newer year 5.0s?

Maybe. It's on the passenger side. It comes and goes. Just really irritates me the dealer can hear it when I show it to them and all they say is "it sounds normal to me" smh

I wouldn't worry about it. Honestly it does sound normal. Years ago my brother over honed a 351 in his car which resulted in piston slap that knocked pretty loud, certainly a lot louder than what I hear in your engine, he ran it like that for a little over 10,000 miles and only took it back apart because he was tired of hearing it.

Unfortunately it's either you have the noise or don't in these engines. Not gonna bore people with my story but after having my neighbor who's a ford tech listen to my truck, as well as my dad who's been a mechanic for over 30 years say it sounds normal, you just learn to deal with it. Look up every post about the 5.0 knock and plenty of people respond with saying their truck sounds the same. I'm no expert but from my research, the engines with the noise aren't prone to any premature failure compared to one without the noise. My truck is a '13 with 58k miles on it, btw.

If it's 'normal' then what is it?
I'm not sure any knocking from an engine should be considered 'normal' - esp if it comes and goes.

My guess is in the valvetrain or piston slap. Mine only does it cold or when the weather is really cold, but goes away once it warms up. Today it was 76 out and it didn't do it when I started it up. I've also done an oil change since then and it's gotten better

That is classic 5.0 cylinder 8 bore distortion. I guarantee every 5.0 that exists between 11-14 makes some degree of noise. It's most prominent while the engine is warming up, not cold and not at operating temperature. Whether it's detrimental or not is up for debate, but there are reports of short blocks being replaced to fix the sound. My 2013 5.0 had a short block done however my knock was extremely loud compared to my older '11 that I have now.

Dang you had em for that many miles? I bought mine new with 100 miles. It's always made some type of noise. Just the one morning it was super loud got me on edge. It only does it warming up, once it's warm you rarely if ever hear it. Soon as the high idle shuts down and it runs a bit you can hear it a bit, drive it around, stop and park, you can't hear it. It still pulls 16-17mpg avg, still has plenty of power towing my boat around. I have an extended warranty for 7/100k so time will tell
