The reason people say to connect it to a ground instead of the negative battery terminal is because these trucks have a sensor that tells the truck how much current the truck is using. If you connect it directly, the computer doesn't account for the additional charge and will cause the truck to go into power saving mode. Personally, I just unhooked the sensor that is near the negative terminal and let the truck charge like a normal vehicle and haven't had any issues since.

If you park your truck for the winter, and leave the battery connected, you'll be buying a new battery in the spring.
I would strongly recommend connecting a battery tender. The message you get sometimes is due to driving short drives that doesn't allow the system to full charge the battery. I'd recommend you use the battery tender YEAR ROUND. I do, because I found the messages annoying. Since I started using it, I've never seen the message again.

Yea it’s a 2013 and I’ve only put 300 miles on it this year ... I am parking it for winter.. I ordered the tender but should I unhook the sensor too ??
im thinking this is the original battery so will probably need replacing soon anyway right ???
is it covered under the CPO warranty ?? I assume not
