If its been sitting awhile it could be bad gas.

I'm thinking it was just from sitting awhile. It runs fine now and had around 50 miles on it. A friend mentioned that it could have been the transmission breaking in, which sounds reasonable.

I would have an honest conversation with the dealer about what the truck is doing.....but my bet is on the gas being old if the truck has been on the lot for several months. Especially if the truck sat with only a partially full gas tank. With frequent changes of temp, that situation is ripe for condensation to form and for the gas to go south quickly.
If you love this truck, put some fresh gas in it (maybe evn premium), and drive it for another day or two before you buy it. My bet is that everything clears up for the truck with a fresh tank of gas in it.
