Yeah, that's not an inherent problem you have, hopefully it was the stat.

My 2011 ecoboost was doing this when I towed my travel trailer on an incline the temp would go up. So I lock out 5th and 6th gear when towing. I don’t plan on running more 60 to 65 mph while towing. What it does is allows your motor to run at slightly higher rpms and it pumps more water when running at a higher rpm. In return the temp stays down. I do it every time I tow now and it never gets hot.
