Default 2012 Super Crew 4x4 Lariat with 275,000 miles

The 275,000 are all highway miles, never pulled or hauled a load.

The 3.5L ecoboost engine is shot, burns quarts of oil a week.
The transmission has a problem, feels like a lockup issue.

Have engine code for catalyst problem.

Needs brakes and tires.

The body and interior are in excellent condition.

I am getting a new company truck

I can buy the truck from company for $ 8,000.00

Questions:

Should I buy it.
How difficult and expensive will it be to install a new engine and Tranny

Can the ecoboost engine be replaced with a 5.0 V8

PS. Location is Knoxville, TN area, not looking to do work myself on the vehicle.
If I could get it for $4000 would it make sense to purchase it?

Any other thoughts.

Thanks

There are many factors at play here. Depending on your location, and if you're doing the work yourself, you're probably in it for $5k-$6k for a good used power train (parts only). IMO they're asking too much for the truck to start with, ask for an employee discount!

I edited post to answer your questions, as complete as I could.

As far as the 5.0 swap goes, it's doable but you're going to need a bunch of little parts to make it happen (along with the block obviously). I'd stick with a EcoBoost unless you can get a complete 5.0 truck to remove parts from. For a complete powertrain swap, you're probably looking at a couple days of labour at X shop rate. Then tires and brakes, another $1500 or so depending on what you get.

As far as if it's worth it, if you say the rest of the truck is in great shape then yeah it could be. Once the powetrain is swapped the axel(s) are probably the next weak link along with front end components (not that big of a deal). The one problem is you're going to pour a bunch of money into the truck to get it on the road. That sum would probably be more than what the truck is worth in the eyes of an insurance company if it was ever damaged in an accident and declared a total loss.

Pretty sad, an engine that has been babied on the highway it's whole life cannot even go 300k. So much for Ecoboost durability. There is a 5.0 on this forum with 285k hard miles still going strong. And to the OP, I wouldn't buy it for even 4,000.

lol haters are gonna hate. to be honest i only look for 250k on a motor without having to rebuild. i do think 8k is crazy. 4k is a bit much. 2k may be a good deal.

Jeez, your company must be thinking of profit at your risk. At 8K I would walk away, or offer the 4K. If they say no, tip your hat and let them keep it. They've got their money's worth, and paid for the truck probably twice in depreciation taxes. I'm old, so I say screw 'em.

I think at 4K you could have all the work done, and have a nice truck at a reasonable price. To save you some money you may be able to find a remanufactured engine/transmission. Good luck.

$4k tops, I wouldn't spend more than that on it. Honestly 275k ain't bad. Who knows how long they went on oil changes, etc.

Heck, if you got it for $4k and decided you didn't want to spend more on it, you could part it out and make that back easily. BUT, you would need to be inclined to that sort of thing.

Thanks for the input Do you know it was babied?

There are a few Eco's with over 300k kicking around on the forums too.
