Do you guys know how many people have exhaust leaks? They are not falling off the face off the earth....If he gets stuck in snow and the exhaust fumes cant escape... its going to go out the pipe? If by some wild freak accident that he hits a stack of plywood and it seals off the WHOLE bottom of the truck and it has no way to escape.. Hes going to smell it...

Theres a few members that posted in this thread that should just stay out of this thread. And there is one getting a warning. If you don't like this mod, then stay out of the thread, its simple as that.

This made me lol.
My first truck was a '60 chevy with headers and the gaskets between the collectors and the rest of the exhast would get wet and fall out. It sounded like a harley when going through a drive through.

For $30 any exhaust shop will cut out your muffler and replace it with a straight piece of pipe. That way you are not creating an exhaust leak.

That's what I did.

Also, what's not been brought up here yet is exhaust tuning. By creating that leak you are changing the length of the exhaust pipe. Changing the back-pressure, in simple terms. What you are really doing is changing the timing of the return pressure waves. This changes the cylinder filling, and throws off your tune. That's why a car with an exhaust leak usually runs like crap and is down on power.

I know full aftermarket cat back exhaust systems are pricey. But they are priced that way just because that's what people are willing to pay for it. It's the one area where a custom built one-off piece is cheaper than the mass-produced items.

Anyway Good luck.

this "mod" will create no more under truck fumes than doing a turndown.
I ran turn downs on non catalyst exhaust on my S10 for close to 10 years and it never killed me, and this INCLUDED being stuck in a snow bank AND the truck was lowered to the point where there was only 5" between the frame and the ground without snow. yes the "potential" is there for carbon monoxide poisoning, but its highly unlikely. as long as you understand the potential is there and you take the needed precautions should one of those rare occasions (like stuck in a snow bank) arise, there should not be any problem with this.

Exactly. Thank you.

If you cut your muffler out you can't go back to stock.

Also, I've tuned a 1997 F-350 with a 460, supercharged 1997 Honda 2.2L H22, and a Turbo 2004 S2000 with a 2.2L that put 477 HP to the wheels. I know all about tuning. This didn't hurt a thing. Your statement in red is semi-incorrect. The reason cars with exhaust leakes USED to (carbureted engines) "run like crap" (burn valves) is because there was less back-pressure thus more air was allowed to flow through the engine. With more air you also need more gas to keep a stoichiometric (14.7) AFR. Well before there was EFI, you got what you got...unless you adjusted the carb to add more gas or turned the distributor to advance/retard timing. This is why people used to think that "running an open header will burn valves"...they didn't know why, they just knew it happened. Well it happened because there indeed was more air flow, but they wouldn't compensate for the gas as well. What they didn't realize is because more air was allowed to flow, they needed to increase the fuel flow as well in order to maintain the proper AFR. Since they didn't do the ladder, the engine would then run lean (hot) and burn the valves. With EFI, you have narrowband sensors that are able to compensate for that small amount of added air, and add enough fuel necessary to maintain a proper and safe AFR, thus not burning valves or harming anything.

I tuned this car:
http://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/8538...-build-thread/ (that's my finger in the picture)

And this:

This was my 1997 F-350 with a 460 that I converted from bank to bank to SEFI using a wiring harness that I made and an ECU that was for a mustang

Here's my supercharged H22 that I converted from OBD1 to OBD2 and tuned with AEM:

Not to mention, I've already tested my AFR's out with this and they're fine

Anyone else wanna lecture me on tuning?

Hey Jon Ill admit I was wrong for the calling names, but I just couldn't believe it when I saw you installed washers to make a gap between your cat and muffler to sound louder!

It's all good.

May I ask why that's so surprising...? I mean I am a country boy from ND so I could be classified as a redneck, but I honestly don't get why doing something that accomplishes my goal for very little $$ is such a bad thing...?

You should drill holes in the intake too. Help it breath a little.
