Default 2012 f-150 fx4 5.0 - RPM jumps around at 1500 on cold start

Off of a cold start (Doesnt matter if its 100 degrees or 50degrees) i will start to drive and the first time it hits 1500 RPM it will do this bucking (Jumps the RPM's between 1200-2000 during this bucking action) for a few sec's and then go away for the rest of the drive. It idles smooth on the start up and during the rest of the drive. It doesnt shift hard either. It will need to sit for several hours before it will do it again on the next cold start up. It did a it 50% of the time before my 60,000 Maintenance and it went away for 2-3 weeks and is slowly starting to happen again but randomly. I have only had the truck for 5,000 miles.

Anyone had this issue and found what was wrong? Thanks for the help. I'm trying to get a video of it happening to post.

Question

Do you have an aftermarket air intake system installed?
.

I have the same truck with about 43k on it and it has done this same thing since I bought it around 10k miles ago. The fuel pump died a month ago and I was hopeful that was what was causing it, but no. Within days of replacing the pump it was doing it again. It's random but when it happens it's always when I first drive off after it's been sitting for several hours.

I dont want to take it to the dealership and them rack up a huge bill replacing random parts until its gone. Lets hope someone out here had the same issue and was able to fix it.

Any chance it could be bad gas?

Ive got gas at a few different places. I actually just put some lucas cleaner in my tank when i filled up today. It does it several times on each tank. Its just hard to predict for me to even take it somewhere to show them. Im trying to record the RPM's on every start now to catch it on film.

Ford Motocraft makes a pretty good air intake filter. The aftermarket filter you are using allows contamination to pass through it. BUT, please don't take my word on it. You may want to research the filter you presently use. They have some information on the 2015 or 2014 forums, can't remember which one I saw the K&N filter write up on.

Contamination, excess oil and silicone can affect the sensors and cause problems. If the filter is somewhat plugged or saturated, until it stabilizes after cranking the engine air flow could fluctuate?

If all else fails, Ford service should be able to check and give you an estimate, if repairs are needed. Good luck.

Thank you. I will look into that. One of the guys that commented earlier did say his was completely stock and having the same issue.
