Default 2011 Steering Tight - Sometimes?

I tried the search function, it was helpful. But not definitive. If there's a thread I missed, let me know. Even with all the EPAS threads I didn't find any where the steering problem was intermittent.

My 2011 3.5EB SCAB has 150,000 miles and is showing steering issues. Last week for about 3 days the steering felt very tight, then one morning while driving to work it just 'got better'.? It seemed fine for a couple of days, but now it's tight again. But this time it's only about 1/2 as bad as last time (in other words it takes more effort to steer, but only about half as much as last time).

BTW, no CEL and no code.

I believe a failing Rack and Pinion assembly is the most likely suspect, just wanted to ask if there's anything else to check.

As usual all help is appreciated.
Thanks.

Check steering U-joints for rust or binding. Others have had success freeing up with quality penetrating oil.

I can't believe I had to re-learn this. I vaguely remember doing this with my '08 FX4 a while back.

So, I just sprayed the U-joints with WD-40 (all I had available) and steering seems better. I'll know more this evening on my drive home.

Did you notice if the tightness was associated with warmer temperatures?

Just had this happen on my wife’s truck. Lower steering shaft. 130 clams, and took 30 minutes in the garage to replace.

having tiny-hands would have cut that time down for the lower bolt.

the lower joint was rusted solid.

Yup, just like Straight6jeff said- lower steering shaft.

To Chris4570, ambient temps didn't seem a factor.
