2011 F150 5.0 Burning Oil
I have a 2011 F150 5.0 with 114K miles that I bought new in 2011. The truck has consistently burned 1-1.5 qts of oil between oil changes (every 5K). I have had intermittent stuttering issues the last couple weeks and yesterday the engine light came on for about 5 minutes and then shut off before I could pull off the freeway. Took it to the shop, the code was P0390. They did a full electrical/sensor check and found no issues. I asked them to change the oil while there and found the truck burned through 5 qts since the last oil change (about 4K Miles). The shop told me the stuttering issue was the result of only having 2.5 qts of oil in the engine. At no point has the oil pressure gauge dropped during driving.
In the oil they found trace amounts of metal and told me the rings are most likely failing. Filled it back up and told me to check the oil weekly and keep it topped of.
The shop is not a Ford dealer, but a very reputable/trust worthy mechanic.
Few questions I need help with:
Are there other reasons I could be burning so much oil so quickly?
Is there anyway to minimize the oil burn and keep the truck running for another 50-75K miles?
if the rings are failing, is an engine rebuild really the only likely solution in the future?
Should I be concerned about the engine failing at any point?
I'm at a bit of a loss for what to do here, I love the truck and dont want to get rid of it, but I also dont want to end up on the side of the road with the family.
the truck is a daily driver and a 50/50 mix of fwy/city driving. I don't drive it really hard, but I do put it to work in dirt and snow a few times a month.
Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.
