2011 EcoBoost - Buy or Run Away??
Hey guys,
So I'm truck shopping. Was almost ready to pull the trigger on a new 2012 Ram 1500 with the 5.7L Hemi but then I came across a 2011 Ecoboost with 17k miles for similar money.
Generally speaking I think the Ford is a better truck, even though it's used vs new. And the Ecoboost seems like it makes great power.
But then I started reading on here about EcoBoost problems. I'm searching and reading as hard as I can, but it's a lot of info to process, and some of the threads start back in 2011.
Can someone give me a general synopsis of...
1) What are the common problems
2) Are there solutions? from Ford or otherwise
3) What percentage of trucks are having these problems (is it really everybody or just a small percentage making a lot of noise (for good reason)
4) Are they ways to test a truck (such as on a test drive at the dealership) to see if a particular truck is experiencing said problems?
Thanks in advance. We are going back to the dealer tomorrow night to look at the truck a 2nd time. But the reason I'm looking at a new vehicle and am going to sell my supercharged 600hp 2V Mustang, is that I'm tired of worrying with vehicle problems. I want something comfortable and reliable.
Thanks

One problem I have noticed with my 2012 EB is trying to keep it under the speed limit, it has gotten me in trouble a couple of times. Other than that I love the thing, lots of power, nice to tow with

I've had mine for over 1.5 years and it hasn't had any issues at all.

I am trading in my 2011 XLT Ecoboost for a 2012 Lariat Ecoboost. I have had the XLT for a year and put 36k miles on it, a fair amount of which is from off-road 4wd use. I have not had so much as a miniscule annoyance from this truck. Average MPG from past 20k miles is 20.0.
The Ecoboost sounds like a sewing machine and will rip like hell if you want it to. Another engine was not an option for me when selecting a new truck, and I am NOT someone who places an emphasis on engines...at all.
Great, great truck. Traded my quirky 2010 Tacoma in for it a year ago and have zero regrets.
