Question Max Speed in 4H

Hi all,

Taking my 2016 F150 into the desert this weekend.

Is there a max speed for when the vehicle is set in 4H mode? This route doesn't usually require 4L unless we do something silly.

Generally speaking, the old rule of thumb was 50mph. I imagine gear ratio and tire size (over size) might have something to do with what you can actually do safely.

I've had my '07 at 70 mph (112kmh) without issue or damage.

For me, as a general (personal) rule, if I need 4wd, I need to slow down. I don't use 4H over 45-50.

I think max speed for transferring in/out of 4-hi is 55mph (at least I think that is what is in the manual).

As for max speed, I don't think there is one. I know I've done 75-80mph in 4wd during a nasty snowstorm up in Canada and mechanically, everything was fine. (FWIW, I was on a highway and I saw literally 3 vehicles in 100+ miles and that was a cluster of 3 snowplows 5 miles into the trip...did not see another vehicle on the road (or off) until I got off the highway).

Have you read the owner's manual?

Yes, I've read the manual for my truck - thanks for asking. But I know what it can do, and how to make it do it because I built it from the ground up. Does that help you?

If the manual for yours doesn't mention any speed limitations, then it probably doesn't have any.

I must echo kmlacroix's sentiments: If I need 4wd, *I* will likely not be doing over 50-ish. It's not about mechanical capabilities, it's about responsible safety... for others, yes; but also for myself. One "bloop", and you could be on your roof in a ditch. Of course, that goes for just about any speed. I've seen "flat-lander" folks doing literally no more than 10mph end up in a ditch, just because they didn't know what to do.

The OP did say he’s taking his truck out to the desert. So... go fast have fun! You can wheel in 4h at any speed.
