I'd say it depends on the kind of wheeling you are doing and the conditions. I never aired down when off road unless I was rock crawling.

It's needed in sand also. It creates a bigger foot print and helps keep you on top of the sand

Recommended pressure? Air down until they look bulging but not flat.
If you're running over sand dunes, it'll be a totally different pressure than up a rock face.

Bring ratchet straps and a compressor for if you do blow a bead, but if you stay in the 15-20 range you'll more than likely be fine.
Had to look up the ratchet strap trick, that's pretty cool and great to know. Thanks!

Last week I was at our property and did a test. I first went through a clay mud section with some tree roots at street pressure of 45, locked my rear diff and went through with no problem. Then tried the same spot with locker off and couldn't get through, aired back tires down to 25 psi (kept front at 45psi), went back through with lockers off, no problem.

Or you could just make sure you always have starter fluid and a lighter handy.

At the dunes I always air down to 12-15 and have never had a problem losing a bead. I find that in soft sand the difference between 12 and 20 psi is very noticeable. Can't comment for rock crawling though, as I have never aired down for hard dirt/rocks.

WOW, 12-15 with-out bead locks! I know sand is a whole different story than trails and rocks, but I would have never thought to go that low.

I won't go lower than 15psi in sand. I can see why others would

Sidewall is also a game changer. If I'm running a 33" on a 20" then I wouldn't air down to less than 15. If I was a 33 on a 15 or 16" then yea, I might chance it.
