Happy medium for tires?

Hey guys, im looking into getting new tires in the near future, but wanna know what to look for. Right now im running 265/70/17 Maxxis Bighorns with my 2000 4.6. I don't really like the tires, but I got em for free. I want a tire with a less aggressive AT tread. Id like to go a bit bigger (maybe 285/70/17), but dont wanna drain my fuel mileage. What do y'all think?

I'm running 275/55/20 Cooper Discoverer AT3's, Ive had them for about 10K now and they have got me through everything out camping and sledding. They have an aggressive look. Not a lot of road noise and my fuel milage is good too.

Huh. Alrighty. I think that comes out a little bit bigger than my tires. What motor do you have?

Also, I was looking at the general grabber at2s. Anyone know anything about em?

I have the ecoboost. getting about 14 L/100km not towing

Cooper AT/3 and General AT2 are both good tires. Discount tire Cooper ATP is pretty much the same as the AT/3.

Bug10 06-15-2014 08:43 AM

And what do yall think ill lose moving up to 285/70/17. I wanna say the stock tires are like 255/70/16.

Also, will I have a problem with the 285s rubbing?

Jus Jim 06-15-2014 10:18 AM

mpg wise there are so many factors that contribute. Tire weight, rolling resistance, pressure etc. Don't forget, you will need to get your speedometer re-calibrated for the change in tire diameter.
Rubbing wise read the following thread. At the very end of the first post is a link to some data that is pretty handy.

Yeah. Ive noticed the bighorns are extremely heavy. Most of the ATs I've been looking at in 285 are at least 6 pounds lighter. And I always ride at recommend PSI and what not, but I know there's more then that.

And thank you. I'll check it out.

Also, my dad knows a guy who gives us a slight break on nitto terra grapplers. Are those pretty good all around tires?

bzzr2 06-17-2014 01:06 PM

nitto makes great tires. another suggestion is the cooper st maxx, i run these in a 285 70 17 and am happy with them, look them up.

Ive looked into em. They're pricier than the Nittos though arent they?

ThatBlue4x4 06-17-2014 03:38 PM

Goodyear Duratrac or Cooper ST Maxx

JMiracle 06-17-2014 04:58 PM

I put the Goodyear Adventure AT's in 285/70/17 on my 07 Screw. I really like them so far. I would look in to them if that's what you are going for

Bug10 06-20-2014 11:23 PM

I guess I shoulda mentioned this before. Of course I love the mud, but I have to go through sugar sand a bit more often, which is real easy to get bogged in. What tires will work for that too?

Matthew Parks 06-22-2014 08:02 PM

I've got 285 75 16 (33 by 11 and a quarter) falken rocky mount tires for 750 out the door.

How loud are the cooper st maxx? I love the look, but don't want a M/T sound for my DD.

Ive got BF Goodrich All Terrains size 275 / 65/ 20. They are larger than stock but not too big that they look out of place without a lift. I get tons of compliments and think they look just perfect.

choate 06-29-2014 11:01 AM

My truck came w/ Cooper Discoverer AT3s and honestly I couldn't be happier and wouldn't change them at all. They look aggressive and do the job.

Bug10 07-06-2014 11:08 PM

I'm seriously considering general grabber at2. Any reason I shouldn't?

tritonbullet 07-06-2014 11:09 PM

Nope good tires

I plan on a set myself.

I run General MTRs on my Jeep, and had General UHPs on my WRX. Both perform flawlessly with long tread life. General makes great tires.

torinalth 07-07-2014 05:33 PM

going with Nitto terra grapplers myself. friend also has them, quiet and smoth but bery capable.

Bug10 07-09-2014 03:17 PM

Has anyone else had trouble finding the at2s in 285 70 17?

contenderv07 07-09-2014 03:39 PM

Anyone looked at the Toyo ATII Xtremes???? I've heard nothing but good things from them

GGarrettLane 07-13-2014 02:00 AM

Any thoughts on the Toyo Open Country's?

05CrimsonTide 07-13-2014 08:17 PM

Just bought the cooper st maxx in 295/70/18. They were well worth the money I spent. Aggressive for an all terrain but no highway noise and good manners.
